Alcorn State Women’s Soccer Secures Historic First Tournament Win, Advances to SWAC Semifinals

Alcorn State women’s soccer achieved a program milestone on Thursday night, overcoming a first-half deficit to defeat Texas Southern 2-1 in the Southwestern Athletic Conference Tournament. This victory marks the Lady Braves’ first-ever tournament win and propels them into the semifinals, where they will face Grambling State on November 7 at 6 p.m.
Second-Half Surge Fuels Historic Comeback
Texas Southern initially controlled possession, taking a 1-0 lead in the 33rd minute with a goal from Kamara Bradley, assisted by Liliane clase Baez. However, Alcorn state demonstrated remarkable resilience, regrouping at halftime and launching a spirited comeback in the second half.
Ainara Aldeano proved to be the catalyst for the Lady Braves, scoring twice in the final 30 minutes to secure the win. Her first goal arrived in the 62nd minute,a well-placed finish set up by a precise assist from Annick Zouma,the All-SWAC midfielder of the Year. The dynamic duo connected again in the 73rd minute, with Zouma delivering another perfect pass that Aldeano confidently converted for her fifth goal of the season.
Defensive Standout and Goalkeeping Brilliance
Following Aldeano’s second goal, the Alcorn State defense solidified, successfully repelling a late surge from Texas Southern. Goalkeeper Let’s teach delivered a sensational performance, recording nine saves on 10 shots faced to safeguard the lead. Her composure and leadership were instrumental in maintaining a clean sheet for the Lady Tigers over the final 57 minutes of play.
Offensive control and Team Contributions
While alcorn State was outshot 18-14 they dominated the second half, generating 12 of their attempts and eight shots on goal. Zouma spearheaded the attack with four shots, three of which were on target, while Aldeano contributed three shots, with both finding the back of the net.Valentina Bernal added two shots, supported by contributions from recament, Mariana Ruiz montoya, and Sophia Lopez.
The defensive line,comprised of Larissa Joso Luma,Yeirdan Padilla,Viviana Sanchez,and Veronica Smith,effectively neutralized Texas Southern’s offensive threats and provided crucial protection.
