A Paraguayan soprano is set to make waves in the Italian opera scene with a multifaceted tour spanning from January 17 to February 7, 2026, encompassing performances, masterclasses, and socially impactful concerts. Alejandra Meza’s ambitious schedule highlights her commitment to both performing arts and music education.
Opera and Performance Begin in Ascoli Piceno
Meza’s tour commences with her participation as a chorus artist in Pietro Mascagni’s Rustic Cavalry, a production by the Ventidio Basso Theater Company. The inaugural performance takes place today, January 17, 2026, with subsequent presentations scheduled in Ascoli Piceno, Livorno, and Fasano. The Ventidio Basso Theater Company, under the direction of master Pasquale Veleno, is a prominent force on the Italian and European opera circuit.
Beyond traditional performances, Meza will dedicate a portion of her tour to social projects. On January 19, she will perform in the first of two lyrical concerts at the San Gimignano prison, located in the province of Siena. These concerts are organized as part of the Puccini International Opera Composition Academy’s (IOCAL) initiative, which aims to connect contemporary operatic creation with cultural actions that have a positive social impact. A second concert at the San Gimignano prison is scheduled for January 29.
A First for Paraguayan Music Education in Lucca
From January 21, Meza’s focus shifts to Lucca, where she has been invited as a guest lecturer at the Puccini International Opera Composition Academy. She will lead two master classes on January 21 and 28, focusing on vocal writing in operas composed by young creators selected for IOCAL 2026. This invitation marks a significant milestone, as Meza is the first Paraguayan singing teacher to collaborate in the specialized training of composers at this prestigious international festival.
In parallel, Meza will deliver a “Seminar on the voice in the contemporary repertoire” at the Conservatorio de Música Luigi Boccherini in Lucca, with master classes scheduled for January 22 and 29. These activities are designed for advanced students of both singing and composition, further emphasizing the academic dimension of the tour.
Return to the Stage with Puccini’s Tosca
The operatic agenda continues in early February, with Meza rejoining the Ventidio Basso Theater Company for performances of Giacomo Puccini’s Tosca. These performances will be held between February 5 and 7, 2026, in Ascoli Piceno, Livorno, and Fasano.
The Puccini International Opera Composition Academy, organized by the Puccini Chamber Opera Festival, has become a leading space for the creation of new operas, having premiered over eighty works in the past eight years. The academy operates under the leadership of President Girolamo Deraco and Executive Manager Alessandro J. Bianchi.
With this tour, Alejandra Meza solidifies her standing as an international artist, seamlessly blending performance, teaching, and a dedication to contemporary opera, all while promoting Paraguayan culture and strengthening the artistic ties between Paraguay and Italy. The tour receives support from Ibermúsica, the National Secretariat of Culture of Paraguay, AIE Paraguay, WHAT, and the SGP Paraguay, through international circulation programs for music professionals.
