A celebrated figure in Russian cinema, Vera Alentova passed away unexpectedly on December 25th at the age of 83. The acclaimed actress succumbed to a heart attack while attending a funeral service in Moscow, leaving behind a legacy of iconic performances and a grieving family.
A Sudden Loss at a Colleague’s Farewell
the tragic event unfolded at the Moscow Drama Theater named after Pushkin, where Alentova had arrived by taxi to pay her respects to fellow actor Anatoly Lobitsky. According to reports, the 83-year-old arrived shortly before the ceremony’s start, appearing in good health and carrying red carnations. Witnesses stated Alentova ascended the stairs to the hall with ease,but became ill during the service,losing consciousness.
Paramedics were immediately called to the scene, and Alentova was transported by ambulance to receive medical attention. Despite vigorous resuscitation attempts en route, doctors were unable to revive her.
A Career defined by ‘Moscow Does Not Believe in Tears’
Alentova rose to international fame for her leading role in the 1980 Soviet film “Moscow Does Not Believe in Tears,” directed by her husband, Vladimir Menshov. The film, a critical and commercial success, resonated with audiences worldwide and earned an academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film in 1981. She also appeared alongside Lobitsky in Menshov’s film, “The Envy of the Gods,” portraying a couple in love.
Beyond her cinematic achievements, Alentova was known for her frequent visits to Riga.
A Family’s grief and a Legacy of Love
Menshov and Alentova shared a marriage of over 60 years, a testament to their enduring bond. The director passed away in the summer of 2021, leaving Alentova to mourn the loss of her life partner. The couple’s daughter, Julia Menshova, a well-known television presenter, confirmed her mother’s passing on Friday.
“Mom is no more. Now they are together,” Menshova shared, encapsulating the profound sadness and sense of reunion felt by the family.
