Tigers Remain on Sidelines in Alex Bregman Sweepstakes-For Now

Four teams are vying for the star infielder, but Detroit’s interest appears to be a patient wait-and-see approach.

  • Alex Bregman is a free agent attracting interest from multiple teams, including the Blue Jays,Red Sox,Cubs, and Diamondbacks.
  • the Detroit Tigers have shown limited interest in Bregman thus far, prioritizing bullpen improvements with recent signings.
  • Detroit could re-enter the bidding if other teams falter and Bregman’s market cools, potentially offering a long-term contract.
  • Colt Keith is currently projected to be the Tigers’ primary third baseman in 2026 if Bregman isn’t signed.

The free agent market for Alex Bregman is heating up, but don’t expect the Detroit Tigers to jump into the fray-at least not yet. while the Toronto Blue Jays, Boston Red Sox, Chicago Cubs, and Arizona Diamondbacks are actively pursuing the All-Star infielder, the Tigers are taking a more measured approach, according to a person with knowledge of the situation.

The Tigers’ interest in Bregman remains “lukewarm,” as it has been throughout the offseason, with eight weeks until the start of spring training. However, the team isn’t entirely out of the running. They appear to be adopting an opportunistic strategy, having already bolstered their bullpen with the signings of Kenley Jansen, Kyle Finnegan, and Drew anderson.

What would it take for the Tigers to seriously pursue Alex Bregman? A collapse of other teams’ offers, potentially opening the door for Detroit to present the only long-term contract. If the market doesn’t crash,or if the Tigers remain hesitant,Colt Keith-a 24-year-old left-handed hitter-is currently projected to be the team’s primary third baseman in 2026. Third base represents keith’s clearest path to regular playing time, with Gleyber Torres at second base and Spencer Torkelson at first base. While a future shift to second base is possible, given Torres’s contract expiring after 2026, Keith’s defensive home is currently at third.

Of course, everything changes if the Tigers sign Bregman. But for now, that remains a distant possibility.
