Former Barça Atletic player Álex Carbonell will be the seventh new face in the project that Amorebieta is building with a view to their return to the Second Division. Born in Cerdanyola del Vallés, Carbonell is a 25-year-old “young veteran” with extensive experience not only in Spanish football, where he already has more than forty games in the Silver Division, but also in leagues such as the Eredivisie. of the Netherlands or the Swiss Super League. He even made his debut with the Blaugrana first team in the 2016/17 season. It was in a Cup match against Hércules, in which Luis Enrique placed him in the starting eleven.
Carbonell usually plays as a midfielder or defensive midfielder, he has good game creation and is very supportive in defensive tasks. Although that is his most common position, on occasions he has played on the right wing and even as an improvised centre-back, which gives a good account of his versatility as a footballer.
The Catalan midfielder had had an offer to renew with the blaugrana, but Carbonell rejected it because, at his age, “competing for a place with a boy who is growing up, I think it was not good for me or for those coming up from the youth team”, such and as he stated this Wednesday in a chat on Twitch with Gerard Romero.
His good poster had supposed him to have many and varied proposals in recent weeks. His signing for Ibiza was taken for granted, but Racing and Deportivo had also sounded him out. At his table he even had offers from the Greek league.
But Álex Carbonell’s objective was to try to enroll again in a Second Division, a category in which he already participated with Reus and Córdoba. He will now do it at Amorebieta, which is shaping a very attractive squad for its return to the silver category.
In his adventures abroad, Carbonell has played twenty games in the Dutch Fortuna Sittard and another nine in the Swiss Luzern. He also spent a couple of seasons at Celta B before returning to Barcelona last year, where he was one of Rafa Márquez’s important men. Starting thirty of the thirty-seven games in which he has participated, he has distributed five assists throughout more than 2,700 minutes of play.
The one who, on the contrary, and as one could already guess, will not continue at Amorebieta in this new season is Gorka Iturraspe. Abadiño’s midfielder and Urritxe’s men put an end to their second stage together. This season, ‘Itu’ has not had any special luck with injuries, which have prevented him from having the desired continuity in an area in which, moreover, he had a lot of competition. The ‘icing on the cake’ to that bad luck came in the second leg of the Champions League final in A Malata against Racing de Ferrol, a game in which he broke his clavicle. The Biscayan club recalls in a note that “his contribution both on the pitch and off it was essential to achieve promotion, thanks to his footballing and human quality.”
