Alexandre Lima, musician from the Espírito Santo group Manimal, died in the early hours of Thursday, aged 54. The artist had been in a coma since 2013, when he had an aortic aneurysm, one of the most important arteries in the body. The information was confirmed by the family.

The wake, open to the public, takes place from 10am to 5pm at Palácio Sônia Cabral, in Vitória, Espírito Santo.

Musician Gabriel O Pensador recently recorded a video about Lima, in which he extols the importance of his friend as an artist. “He was at his peak, he was doing things for music and for his city, until this unexpected situation happened,” he said.

Lima had the aneurysm on November 29, 2013, during a meeting to define the end of year program in Vitória, when he was the city’s Secretary of Culture.

He was admitted to the ICU and underwent surgery, but had a cardiorespiratory arrest during the procedure.

The family even accused the hospital and a doctor on duty of medical error. According to them, Lima fell into a coma because he was without oxygen for an indefinite period in the ICU.

In recent years, the musician’s family members crowdfunded and took part online to raise funds for his care.
