A stunning performance from Alfie Burden culminated in a 63-8 victory over Stuart Bingham at the Snooker Shoot Out in Blackpool, marking his first-ever ranking title win. The triumph comes just days before Burden’s 49th birthday, which he effectively began celebrating with an exuberant climb onto the table following the confirmation of his win at Blackpool Tower Circus.
Burden’s victory is particularly poignant given his long career in the sport. He secured a £50,000 prize for his efforts. “I’ve had a 30-year career and it has been mainly downs – I’ve underperformed – but tonight is a night for me,” Burden shared with TNT Sports. “I’d like to thank all my family and friends for all the belief they’ve had in me. This is a special moment and I’m going to cherish it.” This win builds on his success earlier in the year, having claimed the World Seniors Championship in May.
Bingham Falls Short in Blackpool
Despite a previous appearance in the Snooker Shoot Out final in 2014, Stuart Bingham was unable to overcome Burden’s commanding lead. Trailing 56-7 with just three minutes remaining, Bingham opted not to attempt a full comeback. The 2015 World Champion managed to pot a red ball, but a subsequent attempt at the blue proved unsuccessful.
Bingham was gracious in defeat, acknowledging Burden’s exceptional play. “He looked so cool and calm all the way through. He played brilliantly from the start,” Bingham told TNT Sports.
The Unique Format of the Snooker Shoot Out
The Snooker Shoot Out distinguishes itself from traditional snooker tournaments with its fast-paced, single-frame format. Matches are limited to a maximum of 10 minutes, and players operate under a strict shot clock. During the first five minutes of each match, players have 15 seconds to complete each shot, which is then reduced to 10 seconds for the final five minutes. This rapid-fire structure demands precision and quick thinking from competitors, creating a thrilling spectacle for viewers.
