Algeria’s CAN 2025 Victory Overshadowed by Hate Speech Investigations

Following Algeria’s qualification for the round of 16 in the CAN 2025 tournament, French authorities are investigating multiple instances of hateful online content linked to celebrations by supporters. The investigation underscores the complex intersection of national pride, social media, and rising concerns over extremism.

Algeria advanced in the African Cup of Nations after defeating the Democratic Republic of Congo 1-0, secured by a late goal from Adil Boulbina. The victory sparked widespread celebrations, particularly within the large Algerian community in France. However, these celebrations were marred by disturbing reports of online abuse.

Reports of Hateful Content Prompt Judicial Review

The prefect of the Auvergne Rhône-Alpes region has formally referred several videos circulating on social media to the courts. According to a senior official, one video, filmed in Lyon following Algeria’s win on Tuesday, contains “inciting hatred and violence as well as anti-Semitic remarks made by a group of supporters.” The official invoked Article 40 of the Code of Criminal Procedure, initiating a formal legal review.

Another disturbing video surfaced after Algeria’s victory over Burkina Faso on December 28. This footage reportedly depicts a group of Fennecs supporters chanting: “Open the borders, so we can kill the Moroccans and also add the Jews.” The public prosecutor will now determine whether to pursue legal action against those involved.

Influencer Under Scrutiny for Colonial-Era Rhetoric

The investigation extends beyond fan groups, with a report filed against Franco-Algerian influencer Sofia Benlemmane. The prefect of the Auvergne Rhône-Alpes region flagged a video in which Benlemmane stated: “You colonized us, now you’re in trouble. This country is ours, we do what we want.” This statement, viewed by authorities as potentially inflammatory, is also under review.

The investigations highlight the challenges of monitoring and addressing hate speech in the wake of major sporting events. While the vast majority of Algerian supporters celebrated responsibly, these incidents serve as a stark reminder of the potential for online platforms to be exploited for malicious purposes. The outcome of these judicial reviews will likely set a precedent for addressing similar incidents in the future.
