The American pair, despite qualifying on the ice, is ineligible for the Games due to a citizenship technicality.

  • Efimova, born in Finland, has represented multiple countries but hasn’t yet completed the naturalization process to compete for the United States.
  • Mitrofanov, a U.S. citizen by birth, and his team explored all avenues to expedite Efimova’s citizenship, including assistance from senators.
  • The pair will now focus on the Four continents Championships in Beijing and the World Championships in prague.

efimova sported an American flag on her warmup jacket at the U.S. Figure Skating Championships, but lacked the crucial documentation-U.S. citizenship-needed to represent the country at the Olympics. The duo qualified for the Games based on their performance in St.Louis on January 9, 2026, but were ultimately deemed ineligible.

“Whenever we first started as a team, we didn’t know whether or not the Olympics was even a possibility. We knew it was a long shot because of the paperwork,” Mitrofanov explained.”The more we progressed wiht our skating career, the closer we got to that chance.”

The pair expressed gratitude for the outpouring of support they received. “There were so many people who messaged us and reached out to us wanting to support us,” Mitrofanov said.”So, for us, we’re very grateful.”

Looking ahead, the 2030 Winter Games in the French Alps remain a potential goal. Efimova will be 30 and Mitrofanov will be 32 at that time. “We’re thinking about it,” Efimova said. “Four years is a very long time. For now, I think we’re just thinking of how to approach the next season, because this situation, and after these nationals, it left us with some kind of hunger to make it.”

“If we make it in four years to the Olympics, I think it would be even more valuable, even more precious,” Efimova added, fueled by renewed motivation.
