Alison Arngrim, who played the role of Nellie Oleson on the original Little House on the Prairie,
has returned to the prairie for Netflix’s reboot. The actress, who played the role from 1974 to 1983, appears as a woman in the woods in the streaming series. Her return has sparked nostalgia among fans of the original show, which ran for nine seasons and remains a touchstone of American family drama.
A Villain’s Legacy Lives On
Arngrim’s original portrayal of Nellie Oleson, the classmate of Laura Ingalls, cemented her as one of television’s most iconic young villains. Fans still recognize her decades later, with Arngrim recalling incidents like a McDonald’s cup of orange soda thrown at her during a parade. I still have people yelling at me about all the things I did to Laura 52 years ago,
she told Fox News Digital. Some people are still really mad, and that’s very bizarre.
Despite the bitterness fans once directed at her, Arngrim insists the role was a gift. You’ve got to have a solid sense of who you are,
she said. It’s a tall order for someone who’s like 10, 11 or 12 years old, but when people are talking about this other person who lived in the 1800s, saying, ‘I hate her so much… you can’t take that personally.’
Her advice to Willa Dunn, the actress taking over Nellie, was blunt: If she does it right, people will absolutely hate her. And if she really does it right, they’ll love her too.
The New Nellie and the Old Dynamic
Willa Dunn’s casting as Nellie Oleson has drawn attention for continuing the character’s legacy. Alice Halsey, who plays Laura in the reboot, described their chemistry during auditions. We did a chemistry read so I could meet some possible Nellies, and I met Willa and we had fun immediately,
Halsey said. We were doing the hula and boxing. It was so fun.
Halsey noted the complex dynamic between Laura and Nellie: Nellie is popular and… she seems smart and pretty and doesn’t seem self-conscious at all. She’s rich. She can have everything that she wants.
The reboot, which adapts Laura Ingalls Wilder’s books, aims to modernize the story while honoring its roots. The original series, which starred Melissa Gilbert, Michael Landon, Karen Grassle, and Melissa Sue Anderson, became a cultural phenomenon, spawning a devoted fanbase known as “Bonnetheads.” Netflix’s version, now streaming, plans to adapt one book per season, with the second already greenlit before the first installment was released.
A Bridge Between Eras
