All Blacks Assistant Coach Jason Holland Announces Shock Departure Mid-Grand Slam Tour
A surprise announcement from All Blacks assistant coach Jason Holland has cast a shadow over the team’s upcoming Grand Slam tour, as he revealed he will not seek to renew his contract beyond the end of the year.
All Blacks assistant coach Jason Holland announced today he will step down from his role following the November Tests against Ireland, Scotland, England, and Wales. holland, 53, who oversees the midfield and the team’s attacking strategies, stated he is seeking a change and does not have another position lined up.
Holland shared in a statement, “It’s been a huge privilege to coach the All Blacks and represent New Zealand alongside some great people, both players and management.” He further explained, “Obviously I’ve been taking the time to reflect on what I want to do with my contract coming up for renewal. Ultimately, this is about what gets me excited about being a coach. I was happy to take a two-year contract and the time feels right for me to step away from this role and look ahead.”
The timing of the announcement, on the eve of the team’s departure for their Grand Slam tour, has raised eyebrows. Holland emphasized his commitment to the remaining four Tests, stating, “We’re a close group so this wasn’t an easy decision. I’ve obviously coached with them all in various ways for a long period of time and we think the team are making shifts in the right direction. There are four Tests left, and I’m absolutely focused on helping this team to win in the northern hemisphere.”
The departure follows the unexpected resignation of Leon MacDonald from the coaching staff last year,a move attributed to an irreconcilable working relationship with head coach Scott Robertson. Robertson took the helm after the conclusion of Ian Foster’s tenure at the end of 2023.This latest development inevitably prompts questions about the stability of the coaching environment within the All Blacks.
The All Blacks have experienced a mixed run of form in 2025,currently holding a 7-2 win-loss record. This includes notable defeats against both Argentina and South Africa, signaling a period of transition and challenges in establishing consistent attacking cohesion. Last year saw the team suffer four losses – twice to South Africa, and once each to Argentina and France.
Head coach Scott Robertson acknowledged the news with respect, stating, “There’s a massive amount respect for Jase in our group. Whilst we’re disappointed, he has our support and we respect the decision he’s come to. Not only is Jase a great man, he’s a fantastic coach and has been dedicated to his role in this All Blacks team.” Robertson added that Holland assured the team of his full focus on the upcoming matches, and hinted at “a few new strike plays up his sleeve” for the Grand Slam attempt.
Holland brings a wealth of experience to the role, having previously served as head coach of the Hurricanes and enjoyed a accomplished period with Irish club Munster. He works alongside fellow assistant coaches Jason Ryan,Scott Hansen, and Tamati Ellison. It is understood that the players were informed of Holland’s decision only recently, following a conversation with Robertson after their victory over Australia in Perth.
