The Allman Brothers Band shaped Southern Rock – and became world famous. Founding guitarist Dickey Betts (“Ramblin’ Man”) has died at the age of 80.

The US guitarist Dickey Betts, who played for the Allman Brothers Band for a long time, is dead. Betts died at the age of 80 in his home in the US state of Florida, his family announced via Instagram and on the musician’s website. The musician’s manager also confirmed his death to Fox News. “Dickey had a larger-than-life personality and his loss will be felt around the world,” the family said.
Forrest Richard “Dickey” Betts was born in 1943 in West Palm Beach, Florida. He learned instruments as a child and played in several bands as a teenager. At the end of the 1960s he became a founding member of the Allman Brothers Band, who mainly played rock music. Among other things, he composed the pieces “Ramblin’ Man”, “Jessica” and “In Memory of Elizabeth Reed” for the band. However, in the 1990s the band split up amid a dispute with Betts. Betts, who was married five times and had four children, also worked on numerous solo projects. (dpa)
