BOLZANO. Georg Simeoni has been reconfirmed president of the Avs for another three years. «The fact that the number of members has risen to 78,000 demonstrates once again that the work of the AVS is recognized and that people are happy to be part of the big Alpenverein family» he said on the occasion of the 118th General assembly.

«Compared to the German- and Ladin-speaking population, one in five South Tyroleans is a member of the Alpenverein Südtirol, which is the highest density in an Alpine association in the world», added Simeoni. In his speech he also spoke of “unwanted development”, citing as examples “overdevelopment with infrastructure such as ski lifts, roads, hotels and ski slopes” and “the traffic situation on the Dolomite passes”.

Immediately after the appointment of the new provincial executive, the AVS – we read in a note – presented its concerns and problems. «We have paid particular attention to alpine infrastructures – i.e. refuges and paths – to mountain sports (via ferratas and climbing gyms), to nature and the environment, to climate protection and to volunteering», highlighted Simeoni, who thanked the provincial administration for the written and positive decision to allocate funds for the ten-year shelter program.

At the same time, Simeoni reiterated his request to politicians for simpler bureaucratic solutions for volunteering, which received great consensus among more than 100 officials. During the annual general meeting of the Avs, the honorary membership card was awarded to Mimi Ranzi Vonmetz, wife of the former president of Avs Luis Vonmetz, who has been involved in the association for decades, and Jörg Mayr, who for over 20 years has conducted courses on Avs climbing as a mountain guide.
