Alpha-Gal Syndrome: Mysterious Illness Linked to Tick Bites on the Rise in the U.S.

HOWELL COUNTY, Mo. (KY3) – Alpha-Gal Syndrome, a perplexing illness related to tick bites, is becoming increasingly prevalent in the United States. Known as a red meat allergy, this syndrome has been causing alarming health complications for those affected.

Katie Cahoj, a resident of Howell County, Missouri, is one of the individuals grappling with this syndrome. Recalling her terrifying experience, Cahoj said, “I went into anaphylactic shock. My blood work showed that I had a mild heart attack at 27 years old, which was like horrifying.”

According to recent studies conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Missouri is among the states with the highest number of suspected Alpha-Gal Syndrome cases. The Lone Star tick, prevalent in Missouri, has been identified as one of the culprits behind this syndrome. CDC officials have expressed concern over the escalating occurrence of Alpha-Gal syndrome across the country.

Contracting this illness is a possibility if one is bitten by a tick. In addition to red meat, individuals with Alpha-Gal Syndrome may develop allergies to dairy products and even gel capsules. Cahoj, who was bitten by a tick in 2020, disclosed, “All my reactions are cardiac. It starts off with tingling in my face.”

CDC officials have noted that the symptoms of Alpha-Gal Syndrome are akin to allergic reactions, often leading to hives and the closing of the throat. It is estimated that over 450,000 people in the United States have been affected by this syndrome. Despite facing hardships, Cahoj has turned her allergies into an opportunity for positive change.

“My husband was really supportive, and he was like, you probably need to start actually putting these recipes that you’re trying together into a book,” said Cahoj. This eventually led to the publication of her cookbook, ‘An Alpha Gal Cooks,’ in late 2021. Cahoj aimed to provide resources for individuals dealing with the syndrome, as she had found few available during her own journey.

“I felt very defeated for a long time,” Cahoj admitted. “Then I thought, no, this is not who I am. As a person, I need to get over myself. I need to figure this out.”

She realized that every meal was a trial and error process, prompting her to create recipes that could alleviate the pain associated with the syndrome. “I want people to know what’s wrong with them and to stop harming themselves inadvertently,” Cahoj expressed.

Cahoj emphasized the importance of seeking medical assistance if one suspects they may be experiencing allergic reactions after consuming red meats. She advised individuals to contact their doctors and request a tick panel.

As the prevalence of Alpha-Gal Syndrome continues to increase, the need for awareness and resources grows. Cahoj’s journey serves as an inspiring example of perseverance and determination in the face of adversity.
