The Christmas music season in Norway is officially underway, and a new champion has emerged. Amanda Delara (28) dethroned Taylor Swift, who had held the number one position for 50 consecutive days with “The Fate Of Ophelia,” with her song “Siste Dans.” This marks the second year in a row that the track has reached the pinnacle of the Norwegian charts.
“Siste Dans” holds particular importance as a central theme in the popular Netflix film “snøsøsteren,” released last year, based on the Christmas book universe created by Maja Lunde and lisa Aisato. Remarkably, the song is resonating with listeners even outside the context of the film.
The Rise of Norwegian Christmas Carols
Delara expressed her surprise and gratitude, stating, “it’s quite surreal… I would never have believed it when it was released.” She emphasized the profound connection listeners have with the song, adding, “The best thing about it all is that I get hundreds of messages from people who share their stories and what the song means in their lives.” For Delara, the song’s impact extends beyond chart positions. “Too be a small part of people’s Christmas memories, sorrows and traditions is much bigger than lists and numbers.”
The success of “Siste Dans” mirrors a similar trajectory experienced by Astrid S’s “When the snow melts.” The song gained popularity following its inclusion in the 2021 Christmas film “Three Nuts for cinderella,” in wich Astrid S also starred. Currently, “When the snow melts” sits at number five on the Norwegian charts.
Beyond these two standout tracks, a surge of new Norwegian artists are contributing to the festive soundscape. Ramón’s “Ingenting er magisk” has quickly become a fan favorite, reaching as high as second place and currently holding the fourth position.
A Song for Those Without a “Home”
Ramón Torres Andresen, the artist behind “Ingenting er magisk,” shared the inspiration behind his poignant Christmas carol. In a recent press release, he explained that the song emerged from reflections on the complexities of the holiday season, notably for those grappling with difficult times.
“A time when you spend a lot of time with family and like to come ‘home’,” he stated. “But what about those of us who don’t feel like we have a home?”
The song, he continued, was a personal exploration of finding comfort and redefining the concept of “home.” “I wanted to write a song mostly for myself where I could find comfort in the fact that a home is not necessarily four walls and a nuclear family, but that there are also homes that are perhaps a little broken but with just as much love. A Christmas song that I myself felt I needed.”
The top ten also includes enduring international classics such as Sia’s “Snowman” (2017), Mariah Carey’s “All I Want For christmas Is You” (1994), and Wham!’s “Last Christmas” (1984), demonstrating the enduring appeal of conventional holiday favorites alongside the rising prominence of Norwegian artists.
