Amazfit GTR 3 Pro smartwatch: the big leap

by time news

In the life of any technology company, a product comes that jumps it into another league, sometimes its own league. Which in terms of brand is changing the game. For Apple it was the iPod, for OnePlus it was the OnePlus 7, for Dyson it was the V8, almost every company, it has a product that has changed the way the public perceives it. At AmazeFit this is happening now, with the GTR 3 Pro.

Amazfit, formerly better known as the Huami, has been responsible for the production of Shiomi’s smartwatches for years and has since set out on its own, even changing its name. Amazfit have always made successful watches, with an excellent cost / value ratio, but have never threatened super brands in the field like SMS or Apple – until now. Now AmazeFit is releasing a watch designed to do just that: the Flagship Killer for the smartwatch field, the GTR 3 Pro. Is he successful in the task? We spent several weeks with him and we have an answer.

Design and convenience of the GTR 3 Pro

The GTR 3 Pro is similarly designed to Samsung’s sporty models, a round, black and thin black watch, with a metallic body and a silicone strap, and is resistant to five atmospheres, i.e. 50 meters of water, so it is suitable for swimming and diving.

Its design is matter-of-fact but elegant with rounded lines. Its operation, apart from the touch screen of course, is with two buttons that can be set to function, but usually they function as a home button that takes you back before the clock or a list of applications and a bottom button that raises the list of favorite workouts. The top button is also a pulley (Crown) button but we did not really need it in normal use (we scrolled on the responsive and excellent touch screen).

Also between the buttons is a speaker opening and the microphone eyelet. At the back of the watch is of course the array of sensors, and the two points of connection to the charger (which by the way, is flat and small, but does not act on magnetic inspiration).

The straps are standard 22mm straps with a quick release mechanism so they are interchangeable.

Daily use and measurements

The GTR 3 Pro enjoys an excellent AMOLED screen with a diameter of 1.45 inches and a resolution of 480 by 480 pixels, and reaches up to 1,000 nits, so it is very bright and readable even in direct sunlight, without compromising on sharpness. The show is truly a pleasure.

In terms of dimensions and functionality, the GTR 3 Pro does not fall short of the Galaxy Watch 4 for example or the Garmin watches. It measures almost everything with the company’s highly reliable PPG array: steps, sleep, stress, continuous heart rate, blood oxygen saturation, respiration, calories and calories in activity, distance, stress, menstrual cycle monitoring for women and even metrics not found in every watch such as heat measurement Body (the heat on the wrist, of course, will be a few degrees lower than conventional heat measurement, and yet – useful and nice). The only physical measurement missing here is an ECG. The measurement, from what we were impressed with – is good and accurate.

It includes automatic measurement of common activities such as walking, running or cycling, and in training, it performs accurate and continuous measurement of heart rate ranges (warm-up, fat burning, aerobics, etc.), estimates recovery times, training load, training efficiency and calories burned. It will cover every need of a casual athlete, and also of more serious athletes. His sleep measurement is also very detailed, including a breakdown into light, deep sleep and REM sleep, and sleep breathing monitoring. In terms of measurements, the GTR 3 Pro has nothing to be ashamed of alongside more expensive watches.

Amazfit is proud that this watch has the ability to monitor 150 different sports. While it does encompass almost any type of exercise you can think of, including activities like skipping, rope pulling, bows or specific types of dance (from zombie through ballet to modern), HIIT and more, but (!) To the delight of geeks, it also counts Board games, e-sports and math chess and other activities that are not really challenging in terms of cardio-pulmonary endurance as a sports activity that can be monitored – and even driving. Lucky he is not a super competitive Netflix viewer on the couch…

Also on the usability side, the GTR 3 Pro makes the leap to the major leagues: it serves as a headset (not particularly good in my opinion, but exists) and there is an option to dial directly from the watch (of course, without a standalone SIM but depending on Bluetooth connection) as well as receiving alerts Directly to the clock and the option of replying to messages directly from the clock. The GTR 3 Pro also contains internal storage for music so you can go for a run only with it and headphones, and another really cute feature: a voice command that does not depend on a network connection.

Applications and system in GTR 3 Pro

The GTR 3 Pro runs on a proprietary operating system from Huami called ZEPP OS. It’s not rich in apps like WearOS or Apple’s WatchOS but there’s still a decent selection of apps here that cover every basic need, and even some cute outputs like a pomodoro timer for concentration, voice memos, to-do list and sun and moon display, or find my phone.

The GTR 3 Pro also offers a decent selection of different watch faces, and of course, you can download other watch faces or add your own photos for storage – including a decent selection of beautiful animated watch faces, which surprisingly do not significantly gnaw at battery life. Which is because, in my opinion, there is an over-preference here over an analog clock and not enough digital display options (clock in digits) by default installed on the clock.

And one more word about Hebrew – it’s great. It is clear that Amazfit takes the Israeli market seriously, and this is not something you see every day in slightly smaller companies. Transfers here are excellent and do not include embarrassing falls that can sometimes be found even in larger brands.

Battery life of GTR 3 Pro

Amazfit have always been champions in battery life optimization, and the GTR 3 Pro does not embarrass the firm. The manufacturer talks about 12 days of use for a charging cycle. For us used mixed with medium brightness level, it held a week, including measurements and operation of a continuous pulse sensor 24 hours which is very nice. Of course, with continuous GPS measurement this figure will be significantly shortened.

The Bottom Line

The GTR 3 Pro is a really surprisingly smart watch, with a variety of features that are usually only found in expensive watches, and at a price of NIS 870 (official importer, ie) is a real bargain. With excellent battery life and elegant design, it will meet all your needs from a smartwatch, and even some you did not ask for like body temperature measurement, using the watch as a headset or offline voice command. Has Amazfit managed to jump into the major leagues here? Definitely yes. We are missing a few minor things here, and especially a larger range of apps, but this watch, like the rest of the Amazfit watches, delivers the goods.
