Amazon Alexa Tablet 12 Pro Rivals iPad With Android OS

By adopting a high-end aluminum design, the Mediatek Dimensity 8400 processor, and a transition to a full Android operating system without the restrictions of the former FireOS, Amazon is positioning the device as a direct competitor to the iPad.

Processor Handles Photo Editing but Struggles with Games

Under the hood, the tablet is powered by the Mediatek Dimensity 8400 chip. During testing, this processor has proven capable of maintaining fluid performance, particularly in the variant equipped with 16 GB of RAM. While the hardware is sufficient for image and photo editing, the device may struggle with highly demanding mobile games. However, users can utilize Amazon’s cloud-gaming service, Luna, to stream AAA titles, provided they have a stable internet connection. The tablet supports Wi-Fi 6E for high-speed connectivity and utilizes Bluetooth 5.3 LE for wireless peripherals.

The device includes a 9,000 mAh battery. In testing, the unit reached full capacity in approximately two and a half hours using a 30 W charger. For photography and video conferencing, the tablet is equipped with a 13-megapixel rear camera and an 8-megapixel front-facing camera. The hardware does not include cellular options; users are restricted to Wi-Fi connectivity.

New Tablets Run Standard Android Version

The most significant shift in the new series is the retirement of FireOS. The new Alexa Tablets run a standard version of Android, providing full access to the Google Play Store without the previous limitations of Amazon’s proprietary software. The system is deeply integrated with the Amazon ecosystem; upon logging into an Amazon account, the device presents a personalized “Für dich” (For You) page featuring the user’s movies, series, and Kindle e-books.

Artificial Intelligence is a core component of the new interface. Alexa has evolved beyond simple voice commands into an AI agent capable of holding natural conversations and analyzing screen content. For instance, the system can assist with travel planning by remembering specific details like hotel bookings or dietary habits to offer tailored restaurant recommendations. The tablet features a creative integration where Alexa can transform a user’s rough sketches into finished birthday cards. The company has also announced an update promise of at least four years, with Android 17 expected to arrive in early 2027.

Base Model Retails at 499,99 Euro

The Alexa Tablet 12 Pro is available in several configurations. The base model with 128 GB of storage is priced at 499,99 Euro (UVP), while the version featuring the Nanomatte display retails for 559,99 Euro. Internationally, the device has a starting RRP of $499.99/£449.99 and is currently available across the US, UK, Canada, Mexico, and other European markets.

According to analysis from Netzwelt, which assigned the device a test score of 2,7 (satisfactory), the new branding strategy aims to transition the product line toward high-performance, long-term companions for daily productivity. While the tablet is a powerful alternative to the iPad, reviewers note that there are currently fewer apps specifically optimized for tablets on the Android platform compared to iPadOS. Ultimately, the Alexa Tablet 12 Pro is positioned as an ideal choice for users who already utilize Amazon services such as Prime, Kindle, and Echo, as it serves as a central hub within the Amazon-Kosmos.
