Amazon Unveils New Serverless Offerings at AWS re:Invent Conference

Amazon Web Services kicked off its annual customer conference, AWS re:Invent, in Las Vegas tonight with the announcement of several new serverless offerings. These new services are designed to make it easier for customers to manage Aurora, Elastic Cache, and Redshift serverless services.

According to Matt Wood, AWS VP, Aurora Serverless is a great solution for quickly getting up and running with a cloud database. However, as customers reach very high scales, managing large amounts of data becomes challenging, requiring them to split the database into smaller pieces, a process known as sharding.

To address this issue, Amazon is introducing a “limitless database” feature for Aurora serverless, which will handle sharding automatically. This will allow customers to deal with a single database, eliminating the need to manage shards independently.

In addition to Aurora Serverless, Amazon also announced Elastic Cache Serverless, a serverless caching service that improves response times and reduces database costs. The company claims that the new service is highly available for mission-critical applications, with microsecond response times and the ability to scale for any volume of data in under a minute.

Furthermore, Amazon is incorporating AI into Redshift Serverless to automatically optimize and scale Amazon Redshift data warehouses based on query patterns and data volumes, reducing the amount of behind-the-scenes work required by IT teams.

The key advantage of these serverless options is that Amazon manages all of the hardware and delivers the right amount of resources needed, scaling up when necessary without IT having to manage the back-end work.

Overall, these new offerings aim to simplify database management, improve scalability, and reduce the burden on IT teams, providing customers with more efficient and cost-effective solutions for their cloud database needs.
