Amazon Launches EC2 Capacity Manager too Optimize Cloud Spending

Amazon Web Services (AWS) today announced the general availability of EC2 Capacity Manager, a new service designed to streamline how organizations monitor, analyze, and manage their compute capacity across all accounts and AWS Regions. The tool aims to eliminate the complexities of manual data collection and disparate systems, offering a centralized view for improved cost optimization and resource utilization.
Organizations leveraging Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2) at scale often grapple with managing a diverse range of instance types, Availability Zones, and purchasing options – including On-Demand Instances, Spot Instances, and Capacity Reservations. Currently, accessing this crucial capacity data requires navigating multiple AWS services like the AWS Management Console, Cost and Usage Reports, Amazon cloudwatch, and EC2 describe APIs. This fragmented approach, according to a company release, can lead to significant operational overhead.
“EC2 Capacity Manager helps you overcome these operational complexities by consolidating all capacity data into a unified dashboard,” stated a senior official. Users can now view cross-account and cross-Region metrics for all EC2 purchasing options from a single location, removing the need for custom data collection tools.
This consolidated visibility promises to unlock cost savings by identifying underutilized Capacity Reservations, analyzing usage patterns, and providing insights into Spot Instance interruption trends. By providing a complete view of capacity data, the service empowers organizations to make more informed decisions about infrastructure rightsizing and overall EC2 spending.
Getting started with EC2 Capacity Manager is straightforward.Users navigate to Amazon EC2 within the AWS Management Console and select Capacity Manager from the navigation pane, enabling the service through its settings. The system aggregates historical data from the previous 14 days during initial setup.
Understanding the Capacity Manager Dashboard
The main dashboard provides a comprehensive overview of capacity utilization across all instance types.Key metrics are presented in cards for Reservations, Usage, and Spot, displaying trend indicators and percentage changes to quickly identify patterns. Users can filter data by date range, time zone, and interval settings.
data can be analyzed by vCPUs, instance counts, or estimated costs, providing a flexible view of resource consumption. The estimated cost calculations are based on published On-Demand rates, excluding savings Plans or other discounts, offering a clear comparison of the financial impact of underutilized capacity. For example, the service highlights that 100 vCPU hours of unused p5 reservations represent a greater cost impact than the same amount of unused t3 reservations.
The dashboard features detailed Usage metrics,visualized through total usage breakdowns and time-series charts. These charts separate usage into reserved, unreserved, and Spot categories, helping users identify peak demand periods and overall usage trends.
Optimizing Reservations and identifying Unused Capacity

Data exports extend analytical capabilities beyond the 90-day retention period available through the console and APIs, enabling long-term trend analysis and integration with existing analytics workflows.
Centralized Management with AWS Organizations Integration
The Settings section provides configuration options for AWS Organizations integration, enabling centralized capacity management across multiple accounts. Organization administrators can enable enterprise-wide visibility or delegate access to specific accounts while maintaining appropriate permissions and access controls.
EC2 Capacity Manager eliminates the operational overhead of collecting and analyzing capacity data from multiple sources, providing automated optimization opportunities, centralized multi-account visibility, and direct access to capacity management tools. The service is available at no additional cost and is accessible through the Amazon EC2 console or service APIs, enabled by default in all commercial AWS Regions.
