Awards awarded to excellent aerospace companies operating in the UK and to “women for space”

The last official visit of the British Ambassador to Italy and San Marino, SE Jill Morris took place this morning when she participated in a special event in the Planetarium organized by the Aerospace District of Campania and by Citt della Scienza – IDIS Foundation.

The 20-meter-diameter vault of the most advanced 3D Planetarium in Italy at one point in the live show, curated by the professor of Astrophysics, Giuseppe Longo, showed what the sky looked like on August 14, 1967 in Chester, the day of his birth. by Morris.

“Over the past five years I have had the opportunity to experience the extraordinary nature of this territory firsthand. How much beauty, excellence and competence can express ”, said Ambassador Morris greeting the audience of the planetarium: in the hall the classes of the Giannone scientific high school in Caserta and the Campania companies in the aerospace sector.

During his tenure, Ambassador Morris distinguished himself not only for having promoted and fostered collaborative activities with the United Kingdom but also for his commitment to promoting the roles held by women in sectors that are generally the prevailing prerogative of men.

For this reason, the DAC rewarded, in its presence, three extraordinary women in the research sector who are making a significant contribution to progress with their work.

Mariafelicia De Laurentis, one of the few women who helped take what has been called the photo of the millennium, the first real image of a black hole, was awarded. In particular, the scientist coordinates with others the theoretical analysis group of the experiment of the Event Horizon Telescope consortium. They will soon show a new image of the galaxy for the first time. Francesca Esposito planetologist whose research activity is part of the space exploration of the Solar System and responsible, among other things, for the development of the Impact Sensor of the GIADA instrument (ESA Rosetta space mission) Altea Nemolato, graduate student of the University degli Studi Della Campania L. Vanvitelli who participated in the international competition Lab2moon, with the Radio-Shield project and won with the Space4Life Team, after passing a selection among 3400 teams from 50 different countries. Nemolato in 2022 will give life to a startup aimed at the research and production of materials in the biological and space sector.

In addition, awards were given to companies in the Aerospace District that are present with their own establishments in the United Kingdom or that collaborate permanently and significantly with British companies. The awarded companies are: Leonardo Company, ALA, Telespazio UK, ThalesAlenia Space and Tecnam.

It was also an opportunity to launch the cooperation agreement between the University of Nottingham and the DAC, with which it was established to cooperate for the development of joint projects and study and research programs, as well as dissemination and dissemination, in particularly in the field of green transition in the aeronautical sector. A continuous collaboration relationship has as its objective, more generally, the development of synergies for the launch of joint specialized training programs.

In the explicit agreement that DAC and the University of Nottingham undertake to allow access to their respective facilities and the use of equipment that is useful for carrying out the agreed activities. And for this purpose the DAC has made available to the English partner an adequate space within its headquarters in Via Coroglio, inaugurated with a ribbon cutting by the Ambassador and destined to conduct joint technological development activities for aircraft of the future

The meeting was attended by the regional councilors for Research and Innovation, Valeria Fascione and for Productive Activities, Antonio Marchiello.

The visit, introduced by the welcome greetings of the president of the Idis Foundation – City of Science Riccardo Villari, also marked some important moments including the signing of the collaboration agreement between DAC and the University of Nottingham for studies and technological developments on the transition. green in aeronautics.

“The visit – commented by Luigi Carrino, President of the Aerospace District of Campania – is a precious opportunity to reaffirm the desire to strengthen and expand the already effective collaboration between the United Kingdom and Campania on aeronautics and space”. In the memorandum of understanding stipulated last September, the guidelines for collaboration were outlined concerning, among other things, technology transfer, the synergies between high-profile skills, the interaction between structures and projects. “From Naples to the United Kingdom – concludes Carrino – the bridge is already active, with the development of projects concerning electric propulsion in the first place, that is to say the complex matter of the use of engines to support the propulsion of vehicles in space”.

“The strengthening of international relations is a strategic element that unites Citt della Scienza and the Aerospace District of Campania, recently established in our complex, these opportunities for exchange and collaboration are at the heart of an open, international and propulsive vision that characterizes both poles of ‘excellence, recognized at the European level. ” Riccardo Villari, President of Citt della Scienza, commented.
