OpenAI Bolsters AI Compute Power with Major AMD Partnership
Table of Contents
OpenAI is diversifying its chip supply chain with a significant agreement with Advanced Micro Devices, aiming to secure the vast computing resources needed to fuel its rapidly expanding artificial intelligence operations. The deal underscores the escalating demand for AI-specific hardware and the strategic importance of multiple vendor relationships in this critical sector.
OpenAI has been actively seeking alternative sources of computing capacity as demand for AI compute continues to surge. This partnership with AMD is a key component of the company’s broader strategy to ensure sufficient processing power for its AI initiatives. In September, OpenAI announced a substantial investment from Nvidia – potentially reaching $100 billion – which included provisions for at least 10 gigawatts of Nvidia systems. The company anticipates deploying a gigawatt of Nvidia’s next-generation Vera Rubin chips by late 2026.
Expanding Beyond Nvidia: The AMD Agreement
The new arrangement with AMD allows OpenAI to purchase up to 160 million shares of AMD stock at a price of 1 cent per share, concurrent with the chip supply agreement. Beyond the equity component, the deal focuses on deploying the equivalent of 6 gigawatts of computing power utilizing AMD chips over the coming years.
According to reports from Reuters, OpenAI has collaborated with AMD for several years, even contributing to the design process of previous generations of AI chips, such as the MI300X. This existing relationship suggests a strong foundation for the expanded partnership.
A Multi-Pronged Approach to Compute
OpenAI isn’t solely reliant on external chip suppliers. The company is also reportedly developing its own custom silicon for AI applications, and has already established a partnership with Broadcom, as reported in February.
“The AMD deal does not change OpenAI’s ongoing compute plans,” stated a person familiar with the matter. “This includes its internal chip development efforts and its continued collaboration with Microsoft.” This indicates a commitment to a diversified strategy, mitigating risk and fostering innovation through multiple avenues.

The move highlights the intense competition in the AI hardware landscape and the lengths to which leading AI developers are going to secure access to cutting-edge computing resources. As AI models become increasingly complex, the demand for specialized chips will only continue to grow, making strategic partnerships like this one essential for future success.
