Ukraine – Russia condemned this Thursday the announced shipment by the United States of depleted uranium ammunition to Ukraine. The Russian embassy in Washington on the Telegram network stated that such a sending confirms the alleged “inhumanity” of the Americans. We tried to understand what these ammunition are and what risks they pose.

According to the Russian representation in Washington, the Americans were obsessed with the idea of inflicting a ‘strategic defeat‘ the Russia. For this, says the Russian embassy, the United States would be ready “to fight not only to the last Ukrainian, but also to finish off future generations“.
Still on the Telegram network, the Russian embassy claims that the explosions of these munitions cause “a moving radioactive cloud and small particles of uranium are deposited in the respiratory tract, lungs and esophagus, accumulate in the kidneys and liver, causing cancer and leading to the inhibition of the functions of the entire organism“.

These projectiles are, fundamentally, anti-tank ammunition that are used in some tanks. They were used, as far as I know, in Iraq and Kosovo.
The consequences are, fundamentally, on two levels: on the soldiers who handle this equipment. In other words, this caused problems for the NATO military, particularly the Italian military. It has fundamentally to do with the toxic dust that remains on the ground. Therefore, these toxic dusts can be inhaled, but they also cause land contamination and this then has consequences for the food cycle. In places where these munitions were used there is an increase in oncological diseases: lung cancer, bone cancer, esophageal cancer, degenerative skin development problems, lymphomas, leukemias, etc. Here we have a cause and effect relationship that is difficult to establish because the causes are not immediate.

For its part, the Kremlin claimed that any seizure of Russian funds, public or private, was illegitimate, in reaction to the announcement by US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken, this Wednesday in Ukraine, that Washington would hand over to Kiev 5.4 million dollars from Russian funds.
Meanwhile the Russia has multiplied attacks in southern Ukrainein the area where vital ports for trade on the Black Sea are located.
Case in the area south of Odessa that was the target of an attack this Thursday which, according to a local Ukrainian source, caused damage precisely to the port infrastructure.
However the NATO Secretary General, Jens Stoltenberg, stated this Thursday that the Ukrainian counter-offensive would be advancing and that Kiev’s troops were gaining ground in relation to the Russians.
Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022 and is currently occupying around 20% of Ukraine’s territory.
Kiev’s commitment to strengthening relations with NATO, in the area of defense, and with the European Union, from a political point of view, had been misinterpreted by Moscow, which claimed to fear for its security, ending up invading Ukraine.
The war to this day does not seem to have an end in sight: already in 2014, Russia had occupied the Ukrainian peninsula of Crimea, which it ended up annexing, despite the international refusal to recognize Russian sovereignty over that territory.
