Iran is modernizing its fleet of aging American-made M60A1 tanks. An improved vehicle with additional armor was presented on March 15, writes Army Recognition, Day.Az reports with reference to Lenta.ru.

The tank received additional armor elements on the hull and turret and a protective casing for the gun barrel. The machine gun in the commander’s turret gave way to a remote-controlled combat module. Also, the upgraded version of the M60 received an improved gunner’s sight.

“The continued use of M60A1 tanks, coupled with efforts to modernize this fleet, reflects Iran’s strategic approach to using its existing military assets while introducing modern technologies to solve existing defense problems,” the publication writes.

The basic version of the M60A1 began production in 1962. The tank differed from the M60 in having a new turret, engine and increased protection. The main weapon of the M60A1 was the M68 105mm rifled cannon. In the mid-1970s, Iran acquired 455 M60A1 tanks.
