The documentary “Bissau Vila Morena”, directed by Manuel Loureiro, shows how the Theater of the Oppressed, in Guinea-Bissau, took Zeca Afonso’s theme, Grândola Vila Morena, and adapted it to the Tina rhythm.

Bissau Vila Morena is the documentary that shows us how a song can unite two peoples. The short film, which has as its reference two great figures committed to the fight for freedom, Amílcar Cabral and Zeca Afonso, has already started the film festival circuit and won the maximum award at the Portugal Indie Film Festival.

The film, directed by Manuel Loureiro, shows how the Theater of the Oppressed, in Guinea-Bissau, took Zeca Afonso’s theme, Grândola Vila Morena, and adapted it to the Tina rhythm.

The film, produced by Associação Ser Change, has the strength of a poetic document about the cohesion between the different Guinean ethnicities and can also remind us of the possible consonance between the Portuguese 25th of April and the Guinean 24th of September.

The origin of Bissau Vila Morena, the rescue of Guinean culture and identity, the next documentary projects, one on female genital mutilation and another on the history of music in Guinea-Bissau, are some of the themes of the interview with director Manuel Loureiro and with the president of the Ser Change Association, Roger Mor.
