In the U.S. state of Florida, hit hard by Hurricane Milton, an online broadcaster is controversial for broadcasting live outdoors, ignoring evacuation orders.
According to CNN and BBC on the 12th (local time), American streamer ‘Mike Smalls Jr.’ was holding an air mattress, an umbrella, and a bag of ramen in Tampa, Florida, on the 9th when Hurricane Milton made landfall, in a strong wind. went outdoors.
He started broadcasting live on the online broadcasting platform ‘Kick’ and promised viewers that if he exceeded ‘10,000 live views’, he would go into the water with a mattress.
After the number of views exceeded 10,000, he jumped into the water. But the wind started to get stronger, and Mike, who did not know how to swim, had to hold on to a tree to survive.
At the time, the area where Mike was located was under a typhoon evacuation warning, and most residents had evacuated from their homes. In this situation, Mike broadcasted live for an hour and recorded over 60,000 views on ‘Kick’ alone.
Afterwards, his video was shared on other social media such as X (formerly Twitter) and achieved millions of views.
Last month, when Hurricane ‘Hullin’ landed in North Carolina, Georgia, and Florida, he went out with a tent and conducted a live outdoor broadcast for over 5 hours.
“Ignoring evacuation orders not only jeopardizes your own safety, it also jeopardizes the safety of rescue workers who work tirelessly to save lives,” the Tampa Police Department said. “It can also delay important rescue operations for others.” He warned.
Mike admits his show is “controversial,” but says, “From a content creator’s perspective, people want to see something close.”
He added, “If the price is right, we can do risky things again. “If I do a live hurricane broadcast again, don’t save me,” he added.
