Four soldiers were killed and two South Korean citizens were kidnapped this Tuesday in an attack by armed individuals perpetrated in the oil-producing state of Rivers, in southern Nigeria, the African country’s Army reported.

The gunmen ambushed a convoy of an oil services company on the Ahoada/Abua axis, on the state’s East-West highway, said a spokesman for the Armed Forces, Major Jonah Danjuma, in a statement issued late in the day. Tuesday and published today by local media.

The two kidnapped foreigners are employees of Daewoo Engineering and Company, a South Korean company, and were being escorted by Nigerian soldiers on their way to work.

“Unfortunately, four soldiers died in combat and two oil workers are missing“said Danjuma, who blamed the attack on “suspected militants” of armed groups in the area, although no one has claimed responsibility for the ambush. “Troops are combing the area to catch the perpetrators of this cowardly act. In addition, efforts are being made to ensure that the missing oil workers are found,” the military spokesman added. Danjuma urged the population to provide “credible intelligence information” that can “lead to the arrest of these criminals.”

According to local media, two drivers also died in the attack, although Danjuma did not mention those deceased in the statement. “During the attack, the attackers opened fire on the convoy killing four soldiers and two civilian driversand later they kidnapped two Koreans,” a security source told The Nation newspaper.

Rivers State is located in the Niger River Delta, one of the main economic drivers of the country due to its crude oil fields, which have caused the emergence of paramilitary groups that attack oil installations to demand from the Nigerian Government more autonomy and investments for the region.
