Various hockey relics can be viewed at the exhibition, especially the sports jerseys of Latvian hockey players from National Hockey League (NHL) clubs, the Latvian national team, and Austrian and Japanese clubs. Among the exhibits are the relics of Helmuts Balders, Matīs Kivlenieks, Sands Ozoliņš, Kārļis Skrastiņš, Herbert Vasiļjevs, Sergejs Žoltoks Oskars Bārtulis and other Latvian hockey players, LETA news agency reports.

The exhibits also include hockey equipment, special skates dating back to 1910, hockey armor from the interwar period and the forties and fifties of the 20th century, gloves, hockey sticks, helmets and pucks with autographs, as well as commemorative medals from Riga “Dinamo ” for international games. The first known ice hockey game in Latvia took place in 1909 at the place next to which “Rīga Arena” was built less than 100 years later.

The exhibition is organized by the association “Hockey Atbalstam” and its purpose is to collect donations for Latvian hockey veterans to improve their health.

“The association was founded four years ago with the aim of helping Latvian hockey veterans with food and medical expenses, as well as creating a Latvian hockey museum. The current exhibition in the Sports Museum, where the evidence of hockey history owned by Latvian and foreign hockey collectors has been collected as a result of our association’s work, is a good first a step on the way to a permanent hockey museum,” says Artūrs Spīgulis, the founder of the association “Hockey Atbalstam”. “We greatly appreciate the cooperation with the Sports Museum and the contribution of its employees, very promptly mobilizing resources and exhibiting this exposition right during the world championship.”

The exhibition is open to visitors during the working hours of the museum from May 10 to May 26, 2024. It will also be on display at the upcoming Museum Night on May 18. The Latvian Sports Museum is located in Old Riga, Alksnāja Street 9.
