The popular tourist town of Atrani on the south-west coast of Italy is preparing for an influx of more visitors after being featured in the Ripley series on Netflix this month. However, travelers here will probably not experience the same feeling as the main character of the series played by Andrew Scott.

While the rambunctious bus that Scott is traveling on travels from Naples to Atrani on an empty road and is only passed by one Vespa in the opposite direction, real tourists are more likely to end up in one of the convoys that today mark the stretch between Positano and Salerno. as with its breathtaking views, noted The Guardian newspaper.

It probably won’t be so fairytale-like even on the beach. While in the series the rich American character Dickie Greenleaf and his girlfriend have the virgin sand to themselves, in reality the beach is littered with umbrellas and sunbeds during the summer months. And now there are supposed to be even more tourists.

According to the newspaper, Airbnb, a service offering short-term rentals, said that after the launch of the series in April, it saw a 93 percent increase in accommodation reservations in the area. However, operators of local businesses and accommodation are worried about how sustainable tourism will be in the village.

“If tourism continues to increase, there is a risk that it will not be managed smartly. Our municipality cannot handle large numbers of tourists. Cars, buses and motorbikes paralyze traffic,” said Luisa Criscolo, who runs accommodation in the Chiara’s House apartments. According to her, the authorities should ensure that tourist attractions are open for a longer part of the year. Tourists would then choose other months than the busiest months for their trips to the town. According to her, the possibilities of water transport should also be used more.

Even the operator of other apartments, Antonella Florioová, thinks that the village cannot handle more tourists. “The coast is saturated with excessive tourism. If more visitors come because of the series, I hope it will be out of season,” she said.
