Tom Ripley, a New York crook running errands in the 1960s, is hired by a rich man who sends him to Italy to try to convince his bohemian son, Dickie, to come home. By accepting this mission, Tom enters a twisted spiral that will lead him to lies, fraud and murder.
A new series adapted from the five novels of the American novelist Patricia Highsmith who already enjoyed cinema honors (from “Plein soleil” by Alain Delon in 1960 to “The talented Monsieur Ripley” by Matt Damon in 1999), the mini-series “Ripley” created by Steven Zaillian there are eight episodes in black and white, where every shot is a wonderful painting. The aesthetic of the series is very elaborate and the re-creations are stunningly beautiful.
Lies, deceptions and murders
In this transposition, Italy plays almost the main role, with its narrow streets, its endless stairs, its language that the actors speak half the time. We visit Atrani, San Remo, Palermo and even Venice alongside Tom Ripley played by Andrew Scott at his best. The actor easily puts himself in the shoes of the cold anti-hero, calculating and worrying whether he would rather disturb Dickie’s return to the United States than convince him.
Lies, deception and murder are on the menu in this series of constant tension and suspense. If the rather slow pace could annoy some, fans of film noir will be delighted with the “Ripley”, where we feel the homage to Hitchcock, whether in the story or the wonderful direction.
