Andalusia Launches Landmark Forum too Bridge Art and Rural Life
A new initiative aims to revitalize cultural access and combat depopulation in Andalusia, Spain, with the launch of the 1st Andalusian Forum of Art and rurality. The forum, spearheaded by the Ministry of Culture through the Andalusian Agency of Cultural Institutions, will serve as a crucial meeting point for artists, cultural managers, and policymakers to explore the intersection of artistic practice and rural progress.
Nearly 20% of Andalusia’s population – approximately two million people – reside in rural areas and face limited access to contemporary art experiences. This new forum directly addresses this disparity, seeking to amplify the voices and visibility of artistic endeavors flourishing outside of major urban centers.
The event, curated by renowned professor, critic, and curator Juan Francisco Rueda, is positioned as the first of it’s kind in the autonomous community. It will bring together pioneering projects that have taken root in rural Andalusia as the late 20th century, alongside emerging initiatives from the 21st. The forum will unfold over two days, November 28 and 29, within the walls of the Malaga Museum, featuring a dynamic program of conferences, round tables, and project presentations.
A key objective, as emphasized by Lorena Codes, director of the Andalusian Institute of Plastic and Visual Arts, is to decentralize cultural management. “Through collective thinking and community action, innovation objectives can be achieved that allow us to reach alternative and integrative cultural models,” she stated. This sentiment underscores a broader push to empower rural citizens and recognize the unique cultural contributions of peripheral communities.
According to the forum commissioner, Juan Francisco Rueda, these initiatives represent more than just artistic expression. “These initiatives show the cultural emergence of rural areas through projects that, in many cases, become exercises of resistance against depopulation and territorial imbalances, while opening exemplary avenues of access to contemporary culture in enclaves far from large cities.”
The forum’s program is designed around a holistic understanding of “rurality,” extending beyond mere geography to encompass social, economic, and cultural dimensions. Participating projects have distinguished themselves through innovation and their ability to forge connections between artistic practice and critical areas like sustainability, sociology, and local development.
The event also aims to foster a professional network, facilitating the exchange of methodologies and best practices among leading projects and local Andalusian agents. this collaborative spirit is expected to strengthen the cultural fabric of rural communities across the region.
A diverse roster of professionals will contribute to the forum’s discussions, including artists Jose Jurado (Black Data Center), Miguel Angel Herrera (Genalguacil Pueblo Museum), Juan Lopez Lopez (Aptitudes), Victor Borrego (al Raso), and Alegría and Piñero (Artistic Residences of La Puebla de Cazalla). Also participating are Rafael Jiménez and demetrio Salces (Z Jornadas de Arte), Maria Alcaide (Air Cave), Laura Siles (Black Tip), José María Luna, and Lluís alexandre Casanovas Blanco.
