Google is slowly rolling out Motion Assist to Android 17 devices, introducing a customizable on-screen dot overlay designed to reduce motion sickness while riding in a vehicle. The feature arrives via Google Play services alongside new Find Hub memory capabilities and Guided Vision tools for accessibility.
Smartphone users prone to motion sickness often find that glancing at a screen in a moving vehicle triggers immediate discomfort. When eyes remain fixed on a stationary display while the inner ear registers acceleration and turns, the resulting sensory mismatch causes nausea. The CDC says it can happen when what you see does not match the movement your body feels, which can leave you nauseous or dizzy.
How Android Motion Assist Works on Pixel Devices
The feature, known as Motion Assist, places animated shapes around the edges of the display while users continue interacting with apps in the center of the screen. Google states Motion Assist adds a subtle bubble overlay to your screen that moves with the vehicle. Moving dots around the screen react to the vehicle’s motion and give your eyes extra visual cues. On the Pixel 11 Pro Fold, you get three columns of shapes on the left and right edges, while Google’s phone example shows two.
As the car accelerates, brakes, or turns, the on-screen cues respond dynamically. According to Mashable, the prompt on the settings screen notes that this may help reduce motion sickness when you’re in a moving vehicle. Apple has offered a similar feature, Vehicle Motion Cues, since iOS 18 arrived in 2024. Google began working on its own version around the same time, which originally appeared under the name Motion Cues before Google renamed it Motion Assist.
Checking Availability and Staged Rollout Details
Following the announcement on Tuesday, Google is slowly rolling out Motion Assist to phones running Android 17. The feature is currently arriving through a staged release for select Pixel phones running Android 17, with other Android devices to follow. As Android Authority reports, the feature was first noticed in a beta release way back in December 2024. Because it is delivered via Google Play services rather than a standalone app update, availability varies even among eligible hardware.
Users who want to verify if the tool has reached their device can search for “motion assist” in the Settings app. The long way is Settings app > Google > All services tab > Personal & device safety > Motion assist. Appearing alongside Advanced Protection and Theft protection, this new feature is part of Google Play services. We’re seeing it with version 26.33.32 of Google Play services, but there’s a server-side component.
Customizing the Visual Cues and Quick Settings
Android gives users extensive control over how the visual indicators appear. The Customize menu lets you adjust Color based on system, Red, Yellow, Green, or Blue; Shape in Circle, Square, Pentagon, or Diamond; and Opacity via a slider. It also includes Randomization, where color and shape change every few seconds.
The preference menu lets you have Motion Assist automatically Start in a moving vehicle,
which will activate if it detects the user in a car, bus, or train. Google also recommends adding the Quick Settings Tile, letting you manually enable and disable from any screen. You can add it from this page or the usual edit screen under From system apps.
Once active, there’s also a system notification that lets you disable with a tap.
Expanding AI Capabilities in the September Android Drop
For September’s Android Drop, Google is introducing Motion Assist to help users suffering from motion sickness while using their phone in a vehicle. Soon, you’ll be able to ask Gemini to remember where you placed important items, and it will save their locations in Find Hub so you can easily find them later. For things you don’t put a tracker tag on, like your passport or a spare key, say something like, Hey Google, remember in Find Hub that I put my passport in my bedroom drawer,
and add an optional photo.
Another major addition is on the Accessibility front, where Gemini Live can help users find items or read fine print with Guided Vision, delivering audio descriptions to guide users. Google states Motion Assist will rollout on Android 17 devices, while Guided Vision prepares a debut on Android 9 and newer.
