Google is set to add a feature to Android 15 that will allow users to track the lifespan of their devices’ internal memory chips.

As Day.Az reports with reference to Gazeta.ru, the Android Authority portal reports this.

Drive data will be displayed in the new Device Diagnostics app. Thanks to the new storage lifespan API, already seen in the Android 15 beta, users will be able to see the remaining lifespan as a percentage. This API exposes information collected by the operating system and is intended to improve device maintenance, particularly by optimizing the process of trimming unused blocks in the file system, which is important for extending the life of flash memory.

It is noted that the exact service life display will depend on the specific device, its manufacturer and memory chip supplier. So, some smartphones, including the branded Google Pixel, will display the remaining memory life down to 1%, while other smartphones will be limited to tens of percent.

The full release of Android 15 is scheduled for fall 2024. Pixel 6 and newer smartphones will be the first to receive the update.
