More than five months have passed since the tragic accident that took the life of the brave Civil Guard agent Damaso Guillén, 49 years old, originally from Jaén. In a final heroic act, Dámaso sacrificed his own life to save a group of young cyclists while ensuring road safety in the area. He placed his motorcycle in front of a car that was approaching in the opposite direction towards the participants of a children’s sports race in Grado, driven at one hundred kilometers per hour by a criminal on the run.
The heroism of this “angel of the road” was recognized posthumously yesterday with the presentation of a plaque by his unit companions in the town of Ribadesella, on the occasion of the start of the Vuelta stage.
“We wanted to pay a small and simple tribute to our colleague. We have received it on behalf of his family, colleagues and friends and, on their behalf, we are very grateful,” explained Gerardo Suárez, Head of the Traffic sector in Asturias.
It was the exciting touch of a bicycle festival in the town of Rio de Janeiro. Hundreds of fans came to see the idols, with special attention to the stars of Jumbo Visma and the Asturians, Iván García Cortina, from Movistar, and Dani Navarro and Pelayo Sánchez, from Burgos-BH, with whom multiple photos were taken .
