Angolan Activist on Hunger Strike Amidst Concerns of Unlawful Detention

Amnesty International is urgently calling for the immediate release of Serrote José de Oliveira, leader of the National Union for Total Revolution of Angola (UNTRA), who has begun a hunger strike to protest his detention since July 28th. The human rights organization expresses grave concern over Oliveira’s deteriorating health and the Angolan authorities’ alleged intolerance of dissenting voices.

Meta Description: Angolan activist Serrote José de Oliveira is on a hunger strike protesting unlawful detention. Amnesty International demands his immediate release and access to medical care.

The situation underscores growing anxieties about political repression in Angola, particularly following protests against rising fuel prices. Oliveira’s detention has been widely criticized as arbitrary and a violation of fundamental human rights.

Arrest and Initial Detention

On July 28th, Serrote José de Oliveira was arrested by officers believed to be associated with the Angolan Criminal Investigation Services while livestreaming a video with fellow activists. The arrest occurred during the first day of demonstrations in Luanda, Angola’s capital, protesting increases in fuel costs. During the incident, Oliveira sustained a gunshot wound to his left leg.

He has remained in arbitrary detention at Calomboloca Prison ever since, raising serious questions about due process and the rule of law in Angola.

Amnesty International’s Response

“Reports that Serrote José de Oliveira has gone on hunger strike and that his health is deteriorating is extremely concerning,” stated Flavia Mwangovya, Amnesty International’s Deputy-Director for East and Southern Africa. “Angolan authorities must allow him immediate access to all necessary medical care, and unless he is charged with a recognizable criminal offence, they must immediately release him.”

Mwangovya further emphasized the broader implications of Oliveira’s case, asserting, “His continued arbitrary detention is an ongoing injustice that points to the Angolan authorities’ growing intolerance towards those with dissenting voices.”

Concerns Over Political Repression

The case of Serrote José de Oliveira highlights a concerning trend of suppressing political opposition in Angola. Activists and journalists have increasingly reported facing harassment, intimidation, and arbitrary detention for expressing critical views. This latest development is likely to further fuel concerns about the shrinking space for civil society and freedom of expression within the country.

The international community is watching closely to see how the Angolan government responds to the escalating situation and whether it will uphold its commitments to human rights and the rule of law.
