Angolan academic elected President of the African Committee on the Rights of the Child

News from Angola – Angolan academic Wilson de Almeida Adão was elected, on Wednesday, the 8th, in Addis Ababa, capital of Ethiopia, President of the African Committee of Experts on the Rights and Welfare of the Child (ACERWC-acronym in English), NA learned today.

According to the note from the Angolan Embassy in Ethiopia, the teacher was elected by an absolute majority, in a meeting attended by the Ethiopian President, Sahle-Work Zewde, thus becoming the first Angolan to preside over a body of the System African Human Rights Protection.

With an expected mandate of five years, Wilson Adão takes over the ACERWC whose main functions are based on collecting information, interpreting the provisions of the Charter of the African Union (AU), to monitor its implementation.

Therefore, recommend that the governments of Member States work in alignment with organizations on children’s rights.

The body led by the Angolan also deals with individual complaints about violations of children’s rights and investigating the measures adopted by Member States to implement the Charter of the continental organization.

On the occasion, the lawyer also said that he assumes the presidency of the committee at a critical moment for the promotion and protection of children’s rights on the African continent.

For his part, the Chargé d’Affaires of the Angolan Embassy in Ethiopia, Coutinho Viquissi Copumi, highlighted that the election of Wilson Adão demonstrates the growing strength of Angolan diplomacy in international institutions.

He also highlighted that the country will continue to make efforts to implement the AU Agenda 2063, especially in relation to child well-being.

The new president of ACERWC has a degree in Law from the Catholic University of Angola, a master’s degree in International Law from the University of Lisbon, where he is studying for a doctorate in the same specialty. He is a lawyer, arbitrator and consultant for international institutions.
