The initiative should allow “all French people who wish to join” the great march against anti-Semitism, organized on Sunday in Paris. The Association of Mayors of France (AMF) called Thursday for rallies against anti-Semitism “in front of each department prefecture” on Sunday afternoon, at the same time as the Paris demonstration.

These gatherings should “allow all French people who wish to join this initiative everywhere in France”, indicates the AMF in a press release. They will be held on Sunday at 3 p.m. “in front of each department prefecture”, except in Île-de-France where the association urges “to participate massively in the march” organized at the same time in the capital.

“The very unity of our nation is at stake”

The association indicates that this initiative was taken “in agreement” with the President of the Senate Gérard Larcher and the President of the National Assembly Yaël Braun-Pivet, who had called on Tuesday for this “great civic march” against anti-Semitism.

This march is at the heart of a controversy due to the participation of the National Rally, contested by the left and the Macronist majority. La France insoumise announced on Wednesday that it would not participate. Yaël Braun Pivet and Gérard Larcher declared that they “would not march alongside” the RN, notably represented by Marine Le Pen and Jordan Bardella.

“Faced with the brutal rise in anti-Semitism in recent weeks, it is the very unity of our nation that is in question and that all citizens must defend,” states the AMF in its press release.

1,159 anti-Semitic acts have been recorded in France since the Hamas attack on Israel on October 7, the Interior Ministry announced Thursday. A number almost three times higher than the total for the year 2022, where 436 acts of this type were recorded.
