(ANSA) – ROME, MARCH 21 – “The discussion in the Chamber on the Opinion of the draft EU Regulation on the animal welfare of dogs and cats has reached incomprehensible levels. Italy is among the European nations with the most solid regulatory framework for the protection of these animals, with provisions which in certain cases also take on the function of a model at European level. The proposed Regulation put forward by the Commission, net of sharable premises, does nothing to implement it, proposes lower protection profiles than the Italian ones, operates with confusing and vague delegations and represents an obstacle and not a step forward in the protection of animal welfare”. This is how Fratelli d’Italia deputy Monica Ciaburro comments on the Chamber’s vote on the opinion. “These technical profiles were also detected by FNOVI, the National Federation of Veterinary Orders, and on the basis of these technical profiles the XIV EU Affairs Commission of the Chamber issued a reasoned opinion rejecting the text of the provision as such, because with these we cannot afford to joke about these issues”, he adds.
“With great regret, the colleagues of the 5 Star Movement have transformed an opportunity to do good, political in a transversal way, into a sterile controversy, proposing to accept a terrible text on the basis of its premises, only for the sake of propaganda. If instead to play at the rally worked objectively, perhaps today – he concludes – we would have managed to write a truly positive page on the animal welfare front”. (HANDLE).
