The culinary world is in mourning following the death of Anne Burrell, the celebrated chef known for her appearances on Food Network shows. Burrell, 55, was discovered “unconscious and unresponsive” in her Brooklyn apartment around 7:50 a.m. on Tuesday, June 17, and was pronounced dead at the scene, according to police. Her unexpected passing has shocked many.
In the days leading up to her death, Burrell was enjoying life in New York City. On Thursday, June 12, just days before she passed away, Burrell shared her final Instagram post. The chef posted a selfie with Elizabeth Eaton Rosenthal, also known as The Green Lady, a well-known figure in Brooklyn. The post shows Burrell’s vibrant personality.
Rosenthal responded to the post, expressing her joy at meeting Burrell, inviting her to her garden, and offering her coffee and fig preserves. Following the announcement of Burrell’s death, Rosenthal posted again, sharing her sorrow. “I just love you and so sorry but come to my garden and visit with all your beauty and love and I will be waiting for you,” Rosenthal wrote in tribute.
Burrell was known for her infectious smile and warmth. Her family said in a statement that her “light radiated far beyond those she knew, touching millions across the world.”
Burrell is survived by her husband, Stuart Claxton, whom she married on October 16, 2021, his son Javier, her mother Marlene, sister Jane, children Isabella, Amelia, Nicolas, and her brother Ben.
Burrell’s impact extends beyond the kitchen. Her television appearances on shows like Iron Chef America, Chef Wanted, Chopped, and Worst Cooks in America, captivated audiences. In March 2025, she appeared on the competition series House of Knives. Additionally, Burrell authored two cookbooks, including Cook Like a Rock Star, a New York Times bestseller published in 2011, and Own Your Kitchen: Recipes to Inspire and Empower, released in 2013.
