The separation of the Government and Interior ministries seems like a never-ending task in Carondelet. New extension is eight months.

President Daniel Noboa, through Executive Decree 209 signed this Wednesday, March 27, 2024, granted a new extension for the division of the Government and Interior ministries, which has not been finalized for two years.

The President granted eight additional months for this process, when in principle the previous Government estimated that it would take 100 days and is now in its third extension.

«The period for the execution of the spin-off and creation process provided for by Executive Decree No. 381, signed on March 30, 2022, is extended for a period of eight (8) additional months, counted from the expiration of the established extended period in Executive Decree No. 885, signed on October 4, 2023,” says Noboa’s decree.

On March 30, 2022, the then president Guillermo Lasso ordered “the split of the Vice Ministry of the Interior from the Ministry of Government, and the creation of the Ministry of the Interior” to be in charge of “formulating policies for citizen security, internal protection and public order”.

The new extension for this task comes to 12 days before the end of the state of emergency due to the internal armed conflict that the country is experiencing. The Minister of Government, Mónica Palencia, currently serves as Minister in charge of the Interior.
