Actor Anthony Anderson is opening up about a deeply personal health journey and a brush with a difficult past in upcoming appearances on TV One’s Uncensored. The seventh season of the series will feature the Black-ish star candidly discussing his Type 2 diabetes diagnosis at age 30 and a moment of youthful temptation that could have led him down a very different path. The premiere episode promises a raw and revealing look into Anderson’s life, exploring the challenges he’s faced and the strength he’s found in overcoming them.
Anderson recounts a startling realization that something was amiss with his health. “I was taking meetings all around town. I’m not feeling like my normal self. I was lethargic. I’m taking mid-day naps. I would sit on the couch, and I would fall asleep during the commercials. Things like that never happened to me before,” he shared, describing the early symptoms that ultimately led to his diagnosis. The turning point, he remembers vividly, involved an alarming amount of water consumption. “I’ll never forget [it]. It’s 11:30 at night. I had just put five gallons of water into the water dispenser. Then from 11:30 p.m. Until 2 a.m. I drank five gallons. Every time I went to the bathroom, I had to drink a glass of water. Every time I drank a glass of water, I had to go to the bathroom. When I woke up the next morning, I realized five gallons of water was gone.” This experience, he says, served as a wake-up call to prioritize his well-being.
Beyond his health scare, Anderson also reflects on his upbringing and a period in his youth where he considered selling drugs to make ends meet. He acknowledges the allure of quick money but ultimately credits his strong family values with steering him away from that path. “To be honest, I tried selling weed. I was asked to sell crack, but I saw where it took friends and people that were in my neighborhood, either to the penitentiary or the cemetery,” Anderson explained. “I knew my Mom and Dad would whop my ass, not just whop my ass, but beat my ass if I were ever caught up in something like that.” He playfully distinguishes between a “whooping” and a “beating,” adding a relatable touch to a serious recollection.
