The iconic actor, best known for his decades-long portrayal of Luke spencer on General Hospital, has passed away at the age of 78, leaving a legacy of daytime television excellence.

Anthony Geary died on Sunday in the Netherlands following complications from an operation performed three days prior, according to reports. His husband, Claudio Gama, shared the news with TV Insider, expressing his profound grief.

Geary began his acting career in the 1970s,appearing in roles on shows like All My Children before he joined General hospital in 1978.He captivated audiences as the complex and frequently enough rebellious Luke Spencer for nearly 40 years,becoming a cornerstone of the show’s enduring popularity. His journey with the character wasn’t without it’s twists; Geary departed in 1984, only to return in 1991 portraying a cousin of Luke. However, the audience reaction was unfavorable, as noted by executive producer Frank Valentini, leading to the character’s eventual removal and Geary’s return as the original Luke in 1993. He remained with General Hospital until 2015.

Throughout his illustrious career, geary achieved unparalleled recognition in the daytime television world. He holds the record for the most Daytime Emmy wins for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series, with a total of eight victories. Reflecting on his career in 2015,Geary told TV Insider that he had grown weary of the routine. “There was a moment, after my spinal surgery last year, when it became clear to me that my time wasn’t infinite,” he said. “And I really don’t want to die one of these days on the set of General Hospital.”

The news of Geary’s passing prompted an outpouring of emotion from his colleagues and fans. Genie Francis, who played Geary’s longtime on-screen partner on General Hospital, shared her grief on social media.

“This morning I woke up and went into my husband’s arms. In my sleep, my life was flashing before me and I was afraid of death,” Francis wrote. “An hour later, I received a call from Frank Valentini, he told me Tony died.” She continued, “I immediately felt remorse, I hadn’t spoken to him in years, but I felt his life end in my sleep last night, and with it a big part of me, and mine. He was a powerhouse as an actor. Shoulder to shoulder with the greats. No star burned brighter than Tony Geary.”

Francis described Geary as “one of a kind,” praising his artistic passion and irreverent humor. “As an artist,he was filled with a passion for the truth,no matter how blunt,or even a little rude it might be,but always hilariously funny,” she wrote. “He was the anti-hero, always so irreverent, but even the most conservative had to smile. working with him was always exciting.”

She added, “I was so lucky to be his partner. Somehow, somewhere, we are connected to each other because I felt him leave last night. Good night sweet prince.”

Frank valentini,the executive producer of General Hospital,expressed the collective heartbreak of the entire cast and crew. “Tony was a brilliant actor and set the bar that we continue to strive for,” Valentini said in a statement. “His legacy, and that of Luke Spencer’s, will live on through the generations of GH cast members who have followed in his footsteps.
