Driver Faces Charges in Nigeria Crash That Killed Two Members of Anthony Joshua’s Team
The driver involved in a car accident in Nigeria on Monday that resulted in the deaths of two individuals and injuries to boxing star Anthony Joshua has been formally charged, according to reports from the Associated Press.
Lagos police have charged Adenyi Mobalaji Kayode with multiple offenses, including “reckless” and “dangerous driving causing death,” operating a vehicle without a valid driver’s license, and driving “without due care and attention, causing bodily harm and damage to property.” Kayode was arraigned in Sagamu Magistrate Court on Friday.
Preliminary investigations conducted by the Federal Road Safety Corps suggest the SUV carrying Joshua was traveling at a high speed when it lost control and collided with a stationary truck. While Joshua and Kayode sustained minor injuries, two members of Joshua’s team – Sina Ghami and Latif Ayodele – tragically lost their lives in the crash.
Joshua was transported to a local hospital for treatment and was discharged on Wednesday. The boxer was in Nigeria to visit his parents’ homeland. News of the accident prompted a message of condolence from Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who stated he had spoken directly with Joshua.
“I have spoken with AJ to personally convey my condolences over the passing of his two close associates, Kevin Latif Ayodele and Sina Ghami in the recent accident,” Tinubu posted on social media. “I wished him a full and speedy recovery, and prayed with him. AJ assured me he is receiving the best possible care.”
The tragedy occurred shortly after Joshua’s December 19th knockout victory over Jake Paul. Paul also released a statement expressing his sorrow, writing on social media, “Life is much more important than boxing. I am praying for the lost lives, AJ and anyone impacted by today’s unfortunate accident.”
The investigation is ongoing as authorities seek to determine the full circumstances surrounding the devastating crash.
