A devastating car crash in Nigeria has left boxing superstar Anthony Joshua reeling, resulting in the deaths of two members of his team and prompting a police investigation. Joshua, a former two-time world heavyweight champion, issued his first public statement on Sunday following the incident.
The tragedy unfolded last Monday when the vehicle carrying Joshua and his team struck a stationary truck on a major road near Lagos. Sina Ghami, Joshua’s strength and conditioning coach, and Latif Ayodele, also known as Latz, one of his trainers, tragically lost their lives. Joshua was hospitalized following the crash but was discharged on Wednesday and has as returned to the United Kingdom ahead of the funerals.
The boxer shared a poignant update on Instagram on Sunday,posting two images. One photograph depicts Joshua seated with his mother and three other women, with one of the women holding a photograph of Ghami. He accompanied the post with the caption: “My Brothers Keeper.”
Authorities have confirmed that the driver of the vehicle, Adeniyi Mobolaji Kayode, has been formally charged in connection with the crash. The Ogun state police confirmed the charges were filed at the Sagamu magistrates court on Friday. Kayode faces charges related to causing death by dangerous driving, with the investigation continuing to determine the exact cause of the collision.
The incident occurred shortly after Joshua’s sixth-round knockout victory over Jake Paul in Miami in December. He had been vacationing in Nigeria, the country of his parents’ birth, when the accident took place.The loss of Ghami and Ayodele represents a significant blow to Joshua, both professionally and personally, as they were integral figures in his training and support system. The investigation is ongoing as authorities seek to determine the full circumstances surrounding the collision.
