Anthropic Signs $11.6 Billion Cloud Deal With Akamai

Anthropic has signed an $11.6 billion, seven-year cloud computing agreement with Akamai Technologies to secure central processing units and distributed infrastructure for its growing AI workloads. The massive commitment marks the largest customer deal in Akamai’s history and includes a warrant for 7.7 million shares.

Artificial intelligence model maker Anthropic has dramatically expanded its infrastructure footprint by inking an 11.6 billion, seven-year contract with Akamai Technologies for computing power. The agreement, which pairs the creator of the Claude model line with a major content-delivery and cybersecurity firm, is designed to support soaring demand for CPU computing capacity across distributed infrastructure. Beyond the baseline seven-year commitment, the companies structured a potential expansion pathway that could push the total relationship to approximately $20 billion through mutually agreed-upon terms for incremental cloud services, according to regulatory and financial disclosures.

Akamai Secures Largest Customer Deal in Company History

For Akamai, the transaction represents a historic turning point. Traditionally known for its content delivery network and cybersecurity operations, the enterprise is leaning heavily into cloud infrastructure services. Akamai Chief Executive Officer Tom Leighton noted that the company’s cloud business is growing obviously extremely fast and could soon eclipse sales from its legacy segments. To fulfill the massive computational order, Akamai expects to spend roughly $5.5 billion in capital expenditures—primarily on hardware such as servers, chips, and networking gear—with the heaviest spending concentrated in the following year.

The financial scale of the arrangement caught Wall Street by surprise. Akamai shares surged on the deal, driving the company’s stock up by roughly 19% to 27% in trading sessions following the announcement. Piper Sandler analyst teams raised their price target significantly, arguing that the agreement drastically changes the financial profile of the firm and shifts it from a traditional value asset toward a hypergrowth entity.

“Anthropic is advancing the AI revolution and we are thrilled they chose Akamai’s capabilities for building and operating AI infrastructure at scale. Our expanding global footprint, combined with our years of experience serving the world’s largest enterprises, positions us to be the infrastructure provider for secure and responsible AI applications and workloads.”

Warrants, Equity Stakes, and Distributed Edge Architecture

A notable feature of the agreement is the issuance of equity warrants. Akamai provided Anthropic with a warrant to purchase nonvoting convertible preferred stock equivalent to 7.7 million common shares at an exercise price of $111.33 per share. A portion representing about 2% of Akamai’s common stock vests with the initial $11.6 billion commitment, while the remaining roughly 3% is tied to future expansion tranches.

Leighton acknowledged that issuing equity warrants directly tied to a customer cloud contract is a novel step for the company. Calling it a serious step, he defended the mechanism as a way to tightly align the two corporations. Unlike traditional training workloads that typically rely on centralized GPU data centers, Anthropic will utilize Akamai Cloud’s distributed points of presence to run inference workloads closer to users, leaning on technology acquired through Akamai’s 2022 buyout of Linode.

Market Projections and Revenue Ramp Through 2028

Financial analysts scrambled to model the long-term revenue implications for Akamai. Piper Sandler projected that the agreement implies approximately $1.66 billion in annual recurring revenue at full run rate, anticipating that cloud infrastructure services will surpass the company’s security segment by the fourth quarter of 2028. Bank of America and Evercore ISI echoed optimistic outlooks, with Evercore noting that CPU workloads typically carry higher cash gross margins than GPU alternatives.

Despite viral rumors circulating across social financial platforms citing inflated contract figures up to $12 billion, reporting confirmed the primary multi-year obligation stands at $11.6 billion, building upon a smaller $1.8 billion arrangement struck earlier in the year. Akamai anticipates generating between $150 million and $300 million from the Anthropic partnership next year, scaling toward an annual run rate of about $1.7 billion by 2028.

Operational Execution and Future Milestones

Market observers and institutional analysts emphasize that the ultimate success of the partnership hinges entirely on execution. Observers are monitoring whether Akamai can successfully scale its hardware procurement and data center footprint on schedule, and whether Anthropic’s supplier portfolio remains diversified across its various tech partners. The initial ramp of revenue is scheduled to begin in 2027, with the primary cloud capacity commitments set to go live during the second half of next year.
