Antibiotic Resistance Reaches Critical Levels: One in Six Infections Now Untreatable

A new report from the World Health Organization (WHO) reveals a deeply concerning trend: in 2023,one in six laboratory-confirmed bacterial infections globally were resistant to antibiotic treatments,signaling a growing threat to public health and modern medicine. The report, presented on October 13, 2025, underscores the urgent need for global action to combat antimicrobial resistance (AMR).

Global surge in Antibiotic Resistance

Between 2018 and 2023, antibiotic resistance increased in over 40% of monitored antibiotics, wiht an average annual rise of 5% to 15%. This escalating resistance is documented in data reported to the WHO’s Global Antimicrobial Resistance and Use Surveillance System (GLASS) from more than 100 countries. The findings serve as a stark warning that essential antibiotics are becoming increasingly ineffective, jeopardizing the treatment of common infections.

First-Ever Estimates of Resistance Prevalence

The new Global Antibiotic Resistance Surveillance Report 2025 provides, for the first time, estimates of resistance prevalence across 22 antibiotics commonly used to treat urinary and gastrointestinal infections, bloodstream infections, and gonorrhea. The report focuses on eight bacterial pathogens.

The WHO emphasizes the importance of robust data collection and analysis, acting as a regional counterpart to the global GLASS framework.

A Looming Crisis for Modern Medicine

“Antimicrobial resistance is outpacing advances in modern medicine, threatening the health of families around the world,” stated Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, WHO Director-General. he emphasized the need for responsible antibiotic use, equitable access to medicines, diagnostics, and vaccines, and continued innovation in infection prevention, diagnosis, and treatment, including next-generation antibiotics and rapid molecular testing.

Gram-Negative Bacteria pose the Greatest Threat

The report highlights the increasing danger posed by gram-negative bacteria, particularly in countries with limited resources. E. coli and K. pneumoniae are identified as the primary drug-resistant gram-negative bacteria detected in blood infections, frequently enough leading to sepsis, organ failure, and death. Alarmingly,over 40% of global E. coli and 55% of K. pneumoniae infections are now resistant to third-generation cephalosporins, the standard first-line treatment. In the African Region, resistance to these crucial antibiotics exceeds 70%.

Furthermore, essential antibiotics like carbapenems and fluoroquinolones are losing effectiveness against E.coli, K. pneumoniae,salmonella,and Acinetobacter. The rise in carbapenem resistance,once rare,is particularly concerning,forcing reliance on “last resort” antibiotics that are often expensive,inaccessible,and unavailable in low- and middle-income countries.

Strengthening Surveillance and Global Collaboration

While participation in GLASS has quadrupled from 25 countries in 2016 to 104 in 2023, significant gaps remain. In 2023, 48% of countries did not report data to GLASS, and approximately half of those reporting lack robust systems for generating reliable data. This underscores the critical need to strengthen surveillance capacity, particularly in regions facing the greatest challenges.

A United Nations General Assembly statement adopted in 2024 set targets to address AMR through strengthened health systems and a “One Health” approach, coordinating human, animal, and environmental health sectors. The WHO is urging all countries to report quality AMR and antimicrobial use data to GLASS by 2030, requiring concerted efforts to improve data quality, coverage, and sharing. Countries must also scale up interventions at all healthcare levels and align treatment guidelines with local resistance patterns.

Addressing the growing challenge of antimicrobial resistance requires a sustained, global commitment to surveillance, responsible antibiotic use, and innovative solutions to protect public health for generations to come.
