The political friction inside Malaysia’s governing coalition burst into public view after Zahid Hamidi’s call for Malaysian polls to be held the earlier the better
. Speaking to reporters after concluding a working visit to India today, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim downplayed the challenge to remove his administration, framing the friction as standard internal politics.

Anwar told Malaysian media at a press conference, adding that even Pakatan Harapan, the coalition he chairs, had put forward strong views in the past. Anwar also stated that he chose to take the moderate path, emphasizing that it is important for the government to remain stable, otherwise the nation will lose out.
Zahid’s Push for Snap Polls and the Budget 2027 Battleground
The public sparring follows the Umno general assembly held last week, where party president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi challenged the party’s critics to remove Umno and Barisan Nasional from the unity government, and called on them to table a no-confidence motion against Anwar. Zahid also took several veiled jabs at Anwar, who was referred to as “guru”.
However, the deputy prime minister later reiterated BN’s pledge to remain in the current administration until its term ends. He also said the views expressed by delegates from its various wings and states could not be considered Umno’s official stance and should instead be regarded as personal views. UMNO president Zahid made his party’s position public on Sept 3, following BN’s handsome wins in the Johor and Negeri Sembilan state polls in July and August, respectively, along with newfound ally Parti Islam SeMalaysia (PAS), which also expressed its support for Parliament to be dissolved soon.
Yet the parliamentary math remains the central arena for this standoff. For Zahid’s early election strategy to succeed, his BN coalition, with 30 MPs, would need enough support from other government-aligned parties to defeat the Budget. This would show that Anwar no longer commands the confidence of Parliament, forcing either his resignation or a dissolution of the House and paving the way for fresh polls possibly by end-November. Malaysia’s next general election, or GE16, must be held by early 2028.
Anwar’s Defensive Calculations and Legislative Margins
Despite the posturing from Umno and PAS—which leads the opposition Perikatan Nasional (PN)—Anwar retains a substantial cushion. If the push for early polls fails, Anwar has repeatedly signalled that he wishes to see out the five-year term that only ends in December 2027. On paper, the Prime Minister has the support of 150 MPs in the 222-seat chamber, though the federal legislature has three vacancies, meaning he can afford to lose the backing of 40 MPs and still have a simple majority of 110.

ISEAS – Yusof Ishak Institute principal fellow Francis Hutchinson told The Straits Times when asked if his prediction of a 2027 general election, made during an Asian Insider podcast in June, still held. Hutchinson noted that while BN is pushing, Anwar is fighting back amid a backdrop of corruption cases involving UMNO personalities or alleged financial mismanagement during UMNO’s tenure, alongside indications that PETRONAS and the Sarawak government could be close to an agreement over oil and gas management that could encourage Gabungan Parti Sarawak to retain its support for the unity government.
Navigating Monsoon Floods, Festive Calendars, and the 2028 Deadline
Timing a snap election involves dodging severe seasonal constraints. A general election has never been held in December or January, which in recent years have frequently been marked by deadly floods that displace tens of thousands nationwide and cost billions in economic damage. It could also coincide with Melaka state polls likely to be held ahead of a February 2027 deadline, a month that will see both Chinese New Year celebrations and the start of Ramadan.
Barring an early-2027 election following Hari Raya Aidilfitri in March or Sarawak state elections due by early April, the typical post-Hari Raya Haji—which falls on May 17, 2027—to November period becomes Anwar’s final chance to choose an opportune date. After that, the choice is largely taken out of his hands as the final window is in January 2028 before Parliament automatically dissolves the month before, with elections required within 60 days. August to November remains the most likely window for GE16, with Aug 31 marking 70 years of independence before Malaysia hosts the SEA Games in September.
