The story began in 2010, when a “single and ready to mingle” Garrihy attended her cousin’s wedding with a hopeful eye for eligible bachelors – particularly those in uniform, as the bride was marrying a member of the Garda Síochána. Rather, she found herself captivated by the owner of the wedding venue, john Burke.
Fifteen years later, a “creepy” Facebook add and three children – Hanorah (born 2018), Líobhan (born 2019), and Isla (born 2021) – later, the couple is preparing to welcome another addition to their family, a testament to what Garrihy describes as a chance, yet carefully guided, encounter. The First Spark at Eileen’s Wedding
Aoibhín Garrihy first noticed John Burke at her cousin Eileen’s wedding, hosted at The Spanish Point Hotel, which Burke owns. Accounts of the initial encounter differ slightly, with Garrihy playfully suggesting she may have been the one who first caught his eye. Burke, however, strategically positioned himself to meet the Garrihy family upon their arrival.
Their first date involved Garrihy “making him come to Dublin” for a night out, which she believes was spent at Café en Seine.
Five years later, Burke proposed during a romantic walk along the Cliffs of Moher. Garrihy immediately knew she wanted a wedding that prioritized sentimentality over extravagance. “There’s a lot of pressure on people now to put on productions, and I’m kind of allergic to that,” she told the Irish Independent at the time. “It’s more about the people and the place and the day itself than the glitz and the glam. I hope it’ll be a sentimental day.”
A Sentimental Celebration
The couple’s wedding in 2016 was a reflection of their values. Garrihy wore a simple yet elegant Emma Manley creation, adorned with 3D flowers, a design she collaborated on closely with the designer. She even expressed a desire to repurpose the dress for future occasions, stating, “every embellishment was hand stitched with TLC I feel it absolutely deserves another outing! so whether it’s a christening ensemble or a recycled number for myself those Swarovski crystal petals won’t go to waste and will be reappearing in the future.”
The reception was held at the Armada Point, the very location where their story began, solidifying the sentimental nature of the day.
Expanding the Family
Aoibhín and John welcomed their eldest daughter, Hanorah, in 2018, followed by Líobhan in 2019.their youngest, Isla, arrived in 2021, leading garrihy to initially declare she was “done” with having children. However, the announcement of a fourth pregnancy in November 2025 proved otherwise.
