Saraya anderson, a resident of falcon Ridge, recounted witnessing the fire from the highway. “I saw it from the highway, just the gray plumes of smoke, and then as we pulled up, I realized it was my building,” Anderson said. “I was devastated.” Anderson, like many other tenants, has lost all of her personal belongings.

Questionable Insurance Coverage

In the aftermath of the fire, Anderson sought legal counsel from Jon Powell, an attorney specializing in fire victim depiction. Powell discovered a critical flaw in the apartment complex’s required renters’ insurance policy. “the apartment complex required the tenants to purchase apartment renters’ insurance through the complex itself,” Powell explained. “Now, come to find out after the fire, that policy did not cover the contents. So now Saraya is left without any compensation for all the contents that she’s lost.”

Powell stated that in his 27 years of practise, this is the first time he has encountered a renters’ insurance policy that excludes coverage for a tenant’s personal belongings. This raises serious concerns about the protections offered to residents.

However, Anderson was unaware of this option, leaving her facing substantial financial hardship. “I never thought something like this would happen to me or my apartments, my community,” Anderson said. “Hundreds of dollars worth of clothes, thousands (of dollars) of shoes, I just replenished my apartment with toiletries just everything, I literally just replenished at the beginning of the month.”

Investigation Underway

The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Universal City Fire Department and the State Fire Marshal’s Office. Findings will be released to the public once the investigation is complete.
