Apple unveiled its first foldable phone, the iPhone Duo, on September 9, 2026, entering a passport-sized market crowded with competing devices from Samsung, Huawei, and Xiaomi. The high-stakes hardware race comes amid severe memory chip shortages and rising production costs across the global smartphone industry.
The premium smartphone sector is undergoing its most radical physical redesign in years as manufacturers pivot toward book- and passport-style foldable formats. Samsung established an early lead in this category earlier this year, but a rapid counter-offensive from Chinese competitors has transformed the segment into a three-front global contest involving Korea, the United States, and China, according to reporting by the Korea JoongAng Daily.
Apple Enters the Foldable Arena With the iPhone Duo
The company debuted its first-ever folding device, named the iPhone Duo, aiming to capture pent-up demand among its loyal customer base.
Counterpoint Research projects that Apple could ship six million foldable iPhones by the end of 2026, securing a 25 percent market share before expanding to 40 percent in 2027. IDC similarly credits Apple’s entry as the primary catalyst that will turn a slowing segment into the fastest-growing part of the industry, forecasting more than 17 million units shipped by 2027 with an average selling price exceeding $2,550.
Xiaomi and Huawei Challenge Cupertino Days Before the Reveal
Rival manufacturers timed their own major hardware announcements just two days before Apple’s event in a deliberate bid to capture headlines and position their products on shelves simultaneously. Francisco Jeronimo, a vice president at IDC covering mobile devices, noted that rival vendors intentionally positioned their devices so shoppers could compare options directly once Apple’s hardware arrived in stores, according to Yahoo Finance.

Xiaomi introduced the Xiaomi 18 Fold on September 7, 2026. Designed with a passport-like exterior dimension measuring 117.8 by 83.6 millimeters when closed, the device opens to a 7.58-inch inner display as reported by Merca20. Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun emphasized that the phone is lighter than an iPhone Pro Max, weighing 219 grams with an unfolded thickness of 5.02 millimeters. The device starts at 10,999 yuan.
Huawei took a different hardware path with its trifold Mate XT2, which folds twice to transform into a tablet-sized screen. Huawei held a commanding 22.6 percent share of the Chinese smartphone market in the second quarter of 2026, alongside a dominant 68 percent share of China’s folding phone shipments, TechCentral reported.
Hardware Specifications and the Three-Way Design Battle
The three market leaders have staked out distinct engineering priorities regarding battery capacity, camera capabilities, and physical dimensions. Samsung maintains an advantage in portability, keeping its Galaxy Z Fold8 at 201 grams and 4.5 millimeters thick when opened, compared to Xiaomi’s 219 grams and Apple’s 254 grams.

Conversely, Xiaomi focused heavily on power autonomy and optics. The 18 Fold packs a 6,000-milliampere-hour battery, outpacing Apple’s 5,400-mAh cell and Samsung’s 4,800-mAh power source. Xiaomi also integrated a 200-megapixel main camera engineered alongside Leica, whereas Apple equips the iPhone Duo with 48-megapixel main and ultrawide sensors.
The manufacturers also split on silicon strategy. Apple powers its device with the A20 Pro, Samsung utilizes the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5, and Xiaomi debuts its in-house XRing O3 processor built on a 3-nanometer architecture with 24 billion transistors. Huawei relies on its own Kirin 9050 Pro chip utilizing a LogicFolding technique.
