Top-ranked Texas outlasted No. 13 Tennessee 20-17 on September 26, 2026, at Neyland Stadium, surviving a fierce defensive battle and a late Volunteers surge.
The matchup carried plenty of external spectacle long before kickoff. ESPN’s College GameDay
broadcast live from campus, President Donald Trump attended the game, and celebrities including Peyton Manning, Glen Powell, and Shane Gillis joined a sold-out crowd framed by an orange-and-white checkerboard pattern across Neyland Stadium. Once play began under a noon ET kickoff on ABC, however, the afternoon turned into a punishing test of trench warfare.
Arch Manning and the Texas Offense Find Just Enoughing
Arch Manning made his first visit to Knoxville an eventful one, completing 14 of 19 passes for 201 yards with one interception and no touchdowns. Aside from an early pick and a pair of illegal forward pass penalties, the Texas quarterback engineered two decisive touchdown drives at the start of the first quarter and the end of the fourth quarter to keep the top-ranked Longhorns ahead. The younger Manning entered the contest having posted a 13-3 record as Texas’ starting quarterback over the last two seasons and having won each of his last six starts, dating back to Nov. 22 vs. Arkansas of last year.
Anytime you get an SEC road win in this type of environment against a team like that, it feels good,
Manning said. Manning added that it was definitely a great crowd
and expressed that he was just glad we came out with a win.

Colin Simmons and a Suffocating Texas Defense Ground the Vols
While Manning managed the offense, the Texas defensive front stole the spotlight by overwhelming freshman quarterback Faizon Brandon. Edge rusher Colin Simmons wrecked the Volunteer game plan by dropping Brandon a school-record five times, part of a staggering 10-sack total that ranks as the second-most in a single game in Longhorns history.
The relentless pass rush left Brandon with little time to operate, as wide receiver Mike Matthews repeatedly ran routes into the Texas secondary, turned around, and saw his quarterback either running for his life or lying on his back. The entire Tennessee offense was held to just 221 yards of total offense as Texas bottled up the Volunteers for most of the afternoon. Tennessee football linebackers coach William Inge missed the Texas game because of a medical issue, with coach Josh Heupel noting in the late week that Inge, who was in the hospital, had “small wins.”
Peyton Manning’s Divided Loyalties and Family Ties in Knoxville
The afternoon brought a unique familial dynamic to Rocky Top as Peyton Manning arrived at Neyland Stadium to watch his nephew face his alma mater. Wearing blue jeans and a nondescript white plaid shirt rather than either school’s orange colors, the Tennessee quarterback made his first appearance on ESPN’s College GameDay
outside Neyland Stadium while navigating a split allegiance between the program where he starred and the family tie supporting Arch.
Reflecting on the dynamic earlier in the year at the annual Manning Passing Academy, Peyton explained his perspective when asked who he would be cheering for: “One of the kids was asking me earlier who I was gonna go for. And I said what do you think? And of course he said that he would go for his school over his relative. And I went ‘well you and I are different. You and I are wired differently. Nothing’s more important than your family.’” Peyton further noted, I love my university, my alma mater. Pull for them unconditionally. But nothing's more important than my family.
Other members of the Manning family, including Arch’s father Cooper and grandfather Archie, the patriarch of the family, were highlighted from their seats in the stadium as the younger Manning secured the victory.
A Frantic Finish and Postgame Traditions
Tennessee nearly pulled off a stunning comeback in the closing minutes. After Brandon connected with Mike Matthews for a touchdown pass with 1:22 remaining to narrow the deficit to 20-17, punter Jackson Ross executed a drop kick on the ensuing onside kick. The ball bounced off Texas receiver Ryan Wingo’s hands, allowing Arion Carter to recover it and give the Vols a final opportunity.
The Texas defense stiffened once more, forcing a desperation play as time expired that fell incomplete. In the postgame aftermath, Texas coach Steve Sarkisian and his team celebrated the victory with cigars. In what he said was honoring a Tennessee custom, Texas coach Steve Sarkisian had a cigar in front of him as he took questions.
